Best drug for when you're feelin blue?

Non- perscription that is. For me alcohol makes it much much worse, as I truly found out last night :D

Right now I'm thinking chocolate/caffeine. But I'm open to the less legal kind as well. :surprised:

Esoteric 01-15-2009 11:24 AM

I second that. Sex is a good pick-me-up, if you can get it.

I never found drugs to help much. It's much better to do something that's normally totally off your radar and make youself have fun with it. It's hard at first, but eventually you'll find you're actually having fun.

Baraka_Guru 01-15-2009 11:55 AM

Sex. (Usually self-explanatory.)

Uncontrollable laughter. (The kind that makes you erupt and can bring you to tears.)

It's amazing how similar the two are. Consider that a good response to someone who gives you either is the same as well: "Thanks, I needed that."

Quite a bit behind those are food. My favourite foods help when I'm feeling blue.

ENDORPHINS - nothing like nature's natural crack. Go for a 2 mile walk/run/jog.

Good point.

The exercise/sex/laughter trio all release endorphins.

NoSoup 01-15-2009 03:25 PM

I'm leaning towards either Crack or Heroin.

Probably won't make you feel any better, But later, when you're starring in the nightmare that has become your life, you may look at the current times with a new appreciation. Hell, these just might be the best times of your life!

Ecstacy.

Of course once you come down of that jolly you'll want to curl up in a ball and cry for two days when you realised what kind of a shit hole you've come down to, but hey, at least you'll have a cracking 8 hours before hand!

I like how this thread suggests that when men are feeling down... they should go have sex.

I'll assume hetero to make irony stick.

Sex... with a woman... the source of most of our problems on Earth.

Only because it was the sex that caused women to give birth to the motherfuckers that caused most of our problems on Earth.

Exercise, whether it's walking, dancing, biking, or doing yoga, never fails to perk me up.

Drugs, blues... not a good combo. Exercise.

Toaster126 01-15-2009 05:47 PM

I would also echo exercise. It's a good habit to get into, and the best way to stop feeling blue is to distract yourself and get something to be happy about. Exercising is a great way to do that. Then you can be happy you achieved a goal, more confident in your self-discipline and physical appearance, etc.

Plan9 01-15-2009 05:55 PM

Zeraph: I'd avoid illegal substances. They're bad for your body and bad for your future, especially if you ever consider a law enforcement or military career.

I am in partial disagreement with the above post. :)

Good first sentence. Second one sucked, in my opinion.
How about a great feast? Be it steak, or lobster, or both, that'll really buzz
one out. Follow it up with vigorous physical activity (like dancing), then falling
in temporary love (or better yet, long term) followed by a single, relatively
chaste kiss.

That has buzzed me more than the above ever has.

By the by, I'm a recovering drug addict. So for me the idea of an ultimate
drug rush at this point amuses me.
Shoot crack. If your heart doesn't stop, you'll never know another rush that
will make you wish it would as much, after a while.

Plan9 01-15-2009 07:50 PM

I feel that drug users are like people who rock those hot pink lawn flamingos: selfish and tacky.

Hey now drugs and Blues have been known to work wonders together. Hell, some of the best blues artists smoked weed, did heroin or whatever and their art is fan fucking tastic.

Now, if you don't have the talent, money and desire to stay high 24/7 for the rest of your life and you have the blues, then I would advise finding something.... anything that gives you a zen feeling. For me it's playing with rocks and crystals (lapidary arts), and helping others recover from addictions.

ItWasMe 01-15-2009 10:24 PM

Hmmm... my favorite remedy is chocolate kisses, hot tea, and a handful of nuts. Do these steps *exactly* as I say, and think about each one as you're doing it.

*take a sip of tea. swish around. swallow.
*pop a chocolate kiss into your mouth (don't chew)
*take another sip of tea, enough to melt the chocolate a bit
*tilt your head back, and drop a nut or two into your mouth
*wait for chocolate to finish melting
*chew

Doesn't necessarily solve any problems. But along with it being yummy, thinking about each tiny step gives you something non-blue to think about for a while.

You should. If it weren't for those Canadians taking our jobs and pronouncing our word idiosyncratically you wouldn't have a reason to feel blue.

I tend to like the Canadians here at TFP more than the Americans. Go figure.

...

Sometimes when you're feeling blue, it's okay to indulge. I did when I got back from Afghanistan. I stayed up all night at Bragg watching Law & Order reruns and doing pushups and crunches until the wee hours of the morning while eating turkey sandwiches and drinking Jack Daniels two meals a day. I was hurting inside and I catered to it with sappy music and self-torture until I went, "Okay. Enough. Time to move on."

And I did. I figure we're only human and each of us has our own way of placating the chemical reactions in our brains we call emotions.

I'm still working on apathy, myself.

Zeraph 01-16-2009 07:46 AM

Wow, this thread really got a lot of varied responses!

As far as an update goes; I'm feeling *a lot* better, starting to wonder if I'm bipolar after all. Going to talk to my doctor about it. And just so you know, I was thinking about suicide. Not that that comment would have swayed me :D Thank goodness I didn't go through with it.

Here's to alcohol and sex, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!

Glory's Sun 01-16-2009 07:49 AM

there's pretty much nothing that could convince me to kill myself. If things were that bad, I would want to stay around as long as possible and torment everyone.

So yeah.. talk to your doctor.

Talking to your doctor is a great idea, especially if you're having suicidal thoughts.

Alcohol & drug abuse aren't a good idea, but I admit to being a biased alcoholic in recovery.

I used to think that. But then I went through some very painful things and realized just how much worse life can get.

I don't know what you've gone through, but I've gone through more in the past 2 years than I ever thought imaginable.. and I've never given suicide a serious thought..

Everyone is different.. so you're making the right decision by talking to your doctor.. I would advise however to make sure you get a second opinion especially if they prescribe you an MAOI. Doctors tend to hand those out like candy, and in many instances they aren't needed. You may just need an outlet for your emotions..not a pill.

mixedmedia 01-16-2009 09:04 AM

Just for clarity's sake, there is a medical demarcation between generalized suicidal thoughts and thoughts about the ways that you might commit suicide.

Many, many people have suicidal thoughts and it's not necessarily indicative of a desire to carry it out.

I'm glad you're feeling better. For clarification's sake, by doctor you mean psychologist, not MD?

Zeraph 01-16-2009 02:50 PM

Probably a neurologist unfortunately. I literally have 200 bucks in the bank and my insurance doesn't cover psychs.

murp0434 01-16-2009 03:15 PM

I know we're pretty much beating a dead horse here, but I find "substances" do be much more fun when you're already in a good mood. When I get down I go out and do *something*. literally anything beats sitting at the house/wherever, alone and sad. Pick yourself up and go to the library, lake, pool hall, whatever...get yourself feeling better.

THEN you can ...indulge :-)

Sue 01-18-2009 04:13 PM

Caffeine for sure! Especially in the form of chocolate ice cream. Well, that's MINE anyway. :D

Sex... with a woman... the source of most of our problems on Earth.

A-fucking-men.

Don't get me wrong, though: I love women. Life would be dull and empty, without them. (And I'm not just talking about the sex.) But, man, have they caused me a lot of frustration and heartache.

Anyway... My drug of choice is alcohol; preferably, red wine. It helps me relax and unwind, and it slows down my thoughts and softens the edge on them.

Yep. Get off your ass and do something. Excercise. Sex. Volunteer and experience other people that are worse off than you.

By the way - why you use drugs of any kind to help you through emotional problems and depression you are self-medicating and stepping out on that slippery slope of addiction.

I like your style. Me too.

I've given most of the classic illegal substances a go, though not specifically in order to escape the black dog. Which is good, because that's precisely what they didn't do - particularly the amphetamine variety. I second - third - fourth - the previous comments about exercise. Running especially.

But sometimes you just have to ride out a dark mood, in the knowledge that it won't last - it'll be better tomorrow. That happens too.

thingstodo 01-25-2009 06:58 AM

Reading the pervious post made me think of something else. We appreciate the good times more when we also experience the contrast of the bad times. You can't have good without bad. Ying and yang. It gives us perspective. And on a final note, everyone experiences a little blue-ness from time to time. It's just a part of life. Dealing with it makes you stronger and the support of others makes it much easier to deal with since we are social creatures by nature.

Yes Roachboy Piano, or Dido, Imogen Heap, Anna Nalick, I couldn't seem to figure out why girls listen to these kind of music until I tried. They give you a sense of satisfaction that is kind of perverse.

Don't get me wrong, Zeraph, being sad is not kicking yourself or feeling sorry for yourself, but only to help you realize and asses how far down you are then you can begin to plan for a successful climb back up. It worked for me....

snowy 01-25-2009 01:16 PM

Sometimes when I'm blue I cut myself some slack, turn on Tidal by Fiona Apple, and wallow in it for a bit.

Then I start in on the exercise.

What are you talking about, roachboy? Dido is one of the greatest pianists of our time.

When I'm feeling blue, I like to partake in irony.

Many of us are irony deficient and could probably use subtlementation.
