College student swindler sentenced to 5 years

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA – A college student who with her boyfriend stole the identities of friends and neighbors was sentenced Friday to five years in prison and ordered to pay more than $100,000 in restitution.

Jocelyn Kirsch, a former Drexel University student, and then-boyfriend Edward Anderton used the money for expensive salon visits, exotic vacations and fancy dinners.

Federal guidelines called for a prison sentence of 70 months, but U.S. District Judge Eduardo C. Robreno credited Kirsch for her apparent remorse and for her July 14 guilty plea to aggravated identity theft and other counts.

Kirsch, 23, and Anderton acknowledged stealing the identities of friends and neighbors in the Philadelphia area in 2006 and 2007 to net more than $116,000 in goods and services.

The scheme unraveled when an employee at an upscale salon told police that a check for Kirsch's $2,250 hair extension job had bounced. About the same time, a neighbor of the couple told police a package she did not order had been sent to her.

I know this isn't the important issue here... but WHO THE HELL would pay $2250 to get hair extensions, even if they legitimately had the money? Sadly, after thinking about it, I bet a lot of people would... but I totally don't get that. At all.

Besides that, though...wow. It's bad enough to do this to a complete stranger, but to your friends? That's low.

Apart from the crime commited, I realy dislike this business of remorse in courts. If she showed no remorse she likely would have been given a longer sentence, perhaps the sentence she deserves. Since when should the guilty persons emotions have anything to do with the crime and sentencing after the fact. Having to show remorse(real or fake) as far as I am concerned somehow is not any equilizer or redemption for lack of responsibility.

I live with a West Indian woman and I've gotta tell you, it's mind blowing how hard black women have to work on
their hair. $2250 is waaay excessive, but still. My SO actually plans to open a hair salon catering to black women.

It's funny how you get time off for remorse. Is the remorse for getting caught? Was she feeling guilty when she
was getting those extensions (gold plated, probably)?

5 years is nothing for this crime. She has likely ruined the credit of many people around her who will be haunted by this for the rest of their lives and will cost them countless amounts of money. She should be given 10 years in a chain gang and paid minimum wage for her work which all goes back to the families she stole from.

i heard about this story on the Rolling Stone magazine. I had hoped she would have gotten more time for what she deserved. The remorse thing bothers me too. Who's to say she wasn't just acting and faking remorse? I have no remorse for her situation and she should probably have gotten a longer sentence. But, she's hot, and it helps. =/

I think some unattractive guy who stole $200 from the local 7-11 could show all the remorse he wanted and he'd end up with more time then this woman.

Crime sentences and the pay scale in porn seem to be the only two places that favor females.

Having written sentencing reports to the court in a previous life I can tell you social standing plays a role, sometimes a large role. Usually you're expected to include a section on family history/ties/support, economic ability to return to society successfully etc...

Seemed like as I was leaving this became less of a factor but it used to play a big role. Basically if you were poor you got more time. If you were poor and fugly, you were fugged.
