Rugs

How much do afghan rugs usually run by square foot because i went to the store the other day and some of these rugs were absolutely astronomically priced?

I remember window shopping and finding them very high priced. Depending on the size, a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

I'm going to thread jack just a bit here and tell you the experience with mine. A year ago, my hubby sent one large and a couple of small ones (like 3' by 5') home from Afghanistan when he was stationed there. (they were probably 1/10th the price there) Just a note, one that he sent home was silk and we have to be very, very careful with that one. No shoes, no food in that room, we walk around the rim only, etc. Because not only are they much more expensive, I worry about how hard it is to clean or how expensive to have cleaned. If you get one, I would advise a wool blend if possible. Ours seems pretty durable. But we still go shoeless and keep food away from it :D

Last note: He brought home a very small hand made rug; the others are machine made. The machine made ones he looked at (and bought) seemed more durable than the handmade ones that he looked at (and bought). Look over a handmade rug carefully before buying. Check for any sign of a loose/weak thread or "tie" (okay I don't know the proper word) to make sure it won't start to come apart.

I once walked into a fine afghan rug store. I promptly realized I was out of place. Overstock.com has a 12'x10' for $4,199.99, with the compare-to price at $11,000. That seems cheap compared with the store I visited.

Just make sure it ties the room together...

Lollercaust.

Yeah, those things are waaay too expensive to put on your floor, your wall maybe, but not your floor. Of course, then you'd have to explain to people why you have a rug on your wall - a ten thousand dollar rug at that.
