RIP George Carlin

RIP George. He was one of my favorites. You will be missed.

Quote:
ET breaks the news that comedian George Carlin has died from heart failure. The man who made famous the "seven words you can never say on television" passed away at 5:55 p.m. Sunday at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, his longtime publicist said. He was 71.

Carlin, who has had several heart attacks and a history of cardiac issues, went into the hospital this afternoon after complaining of heart problems.

Carlin has more than 20 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, numerous TV and movie roles, and three best-selling books to his credit. Last year, he celebrated his 50th year in show business, and he had just finished his last HBO special in March, "It's Bad for Ya."

Oh man. I grew up watching videos of Carlin's stand-up performances with my parents, and listening to cassette tapes of his performances, including "Seven Words You Can Never Use on Television." My parents are huge fans of his work, and they passed that on to me. I'm really saddened to hear this.

RIP, George.

If anybody deserves two threads it's this man.

EDIT: Haha, they got merged while I was posting.

He had a full, productive career, and never seemed to lose his edge. As one of the greatest comedians, he kept us laughing for years despite just how crazy the world was.

Thanks, George.

That is one of the things I think is true about George Carlin. Unfortunately few I think seem to realize that he often spoke of how people were concerned with words rather than intent. In interviews, one could easily see that not only was he a funny man, but an intelligent one as well.

I got my first Carlin album when I was in high school. I now have 5 of them and a few, like Charlatan, I had memorized. I could recite the Hair poem at the drop of a hat, would quote Al Sleet, the Hippy Dippy weatherman and nod in agreement on many of his observations. His bit about "If you take 7 white boys and 1 black boy and put them in a room together, you won't get the 1 black boy saying, "Gee, fellas, good game today.", but you WILL get 7 white boys saying, "Yo, Man, Whassup." And that was over 30 years ago.
71 these days is not old. He was and always will be an icon.
What a sad way to start a week.....

I went through about a month earlier this year when I was listening to this cd every day in my car. There are so many comedians, but only a few who are really touched by genius. He was one of those few.

When I awoke this morning and heard the news I was gutted. The local radio personalities just passed over the story which added to my anger.

I can honestly say that I have listened, watched or read some of his work everyday over the past little while. I love stand up comedy and go on binges of certain comedians over the year. Lately it was George.

Bad day at work? Queue up some Carlin on youtube while i did my dishes and made dinner always got my chest heaving with laugher and my mind off my troubles.

I will miss his work.

I've listened to his stuff for over 10 years now (which is long for me).

I always liked his clear, sharp & sarcastic comments, and felt that alot of stuff had a good core of truth in it.

I wonder who's gonna fill up this void now... I doubt anyone will any time soon.

I'm sitting under a clock made from the cover of Carlin's Class Clown album. The Icebox Man routine was the first schtick I ever memorized.

You know 71 years is not a bad run, and we paid him well for doing more or less what he would have done for free to a smaller audience.

When I grow up, I still want to be George Carlin.

“The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating... ...and you finish off as an orgasm.”
