Egg McMuffin inventor Peterson dies
1972 breakfast idea became a big hit for McDonald's

LOS ANGELES - Herb Peterson, who invented the ubiquitous Egg McMuffin as a way to introduce breakfast to McDonald's restaurants, has died, a Southern California McDonald's official said Wednesday. He was 89.

Peterson died peacefully Tuesday at his Santa Barbara home, said Monte Fraker, vice president of operations for McDonald's restaurants in that city.

He began his career with McDonald's Corp. as vice president of the company's advertising firm, D'Arcy Advertising, in Chicago. He wrote McDonald's first national advertising slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day."

Peterson eventually became a franchisee and was currently co-owner and operator of six McDonald's restaurants in Santa Barbara and Goleta, Fraker said.

'Partial to eggs Benedict'
Peterson came up with idea for the signature McDonald's breakfast item in 1972. He "was very partial to eggs Benedict," Fraker said, and worked on creating something similar.

The egg sandwich consisted of an egg that had been formed in a Teflon circle with the yolk broken, topped with a slice of cheese and grilled Canadian bacon. It was served open-faced on a toasted and buttered English muffin.

The Egg McMuffin made its debut at a restaurant in Santa Barbara that Peterson co-owned with his son, David Peterson.

Fraker said that, although semiretired, Peterson still visited all six of his stores in the Santa Barbara area until last year when his health began to deteriorate.

"He would talk to the customers, visit with the employees. He loved McDonald's," Fraker said.

'Embraced the community'
Fraker, who said he worked with Peterson for 30 years, said "he was amazing as far as giving back to the community."

"He embraced the community and the community embraced him," Fraker said. "We loved the man."

Peterson is survived by his wife, son and three daughters.

A public memorial service will be held April 23 at All Saints by the Sea church in Montecito.
Interesting. I have a special place in my heart for Egg McMuffins. When I was a little kid (<6), my mom worked graveyard shifts. She worked in two different hospitals every day, a day shift and a graveyard shift. So she'd put me to bed at night and when I woke up early she sometimes wasn't home yet. As a special treat from time to time she'd bring me an egg mcmuffin sandwich for breakfast and I would spread some grape jelly to it. It was so nice to see my mom come home and this was even better to have her come home and get a special surprise.

To this very day, whenever I'm feeling a bit down, an egg mcmuffin reminds me of a very happy moment in my childhood.

Oddly enough, I was dragging my ass in getting to work this morning. I even told Skogafoss to go ahead of me. I missed the bus so I walked to the subway and stopped at McDonald's for an egg mcmuffin.

Thanks Mr. Peterson.

It's very interesting how one small memory like an Egg McMuffin can bring on a flood of emotion. It shows how just the little things your parents do when you're little have positive and negative effects on your for life.

RIP

Not that I'm eating at McDonald's a whole lot lately, but when I did order one, it's always gotta be pronounced "Eggamuffin"!

Wow, very interesting.

My Egg McMuffin memories aren't so great. I learned that one shouldn't eat Egg McMuffins after just having their braces tightened. My mouth hurt and I tried to eat one while my mom was driving me back to school. I ended up choking and puking out the window.

Later in my life, I found that they do not make great hangover food.

*sigh*

At least I still amuse myself.

RIP, dude.

Was his death linked to his cardiovascular system?

This reminds me of when the inventor of ramen died. Millions of college students will mourn his passing.

My favourite car meal (breakfast). No road trip is complete without a couple of these munched as the sun rises over the highway.

I always order 2 eggamuffins with ham (not bacon) and 2 hashbrowns to go, with a medium coffee. I would open the egg mcmuffins before leaving the store, and squeeze a packet of ketchup and a pouch of pepper on each.

I noticed that the article refers to the ham slice as Canadian bacon. Finally I know what Canadian bacon is. Of course, up here we call that ham slices. To us bacon comes in strips, and looks just the same as American bacon.

So sorry for your loss, Cyn. You do still have your memories, though. :)

Egg McMuffins. *shudder

This is our travel ritual as well...even if flying, we have McMuffins for breakfast.

I hate McDonald's hamburgers, but damn I love me some Egg McMuffins.

I too am a fan of the Egg McMuffin... I can remember when they first introduced breakfast at the McDonald's we went to when I was a kid. My first breakfast was the Hotcakes and Sausage... I hated their pancakes (still do, but I am pancake snob). The next time I tried the Egg McMuffin... heaven.

I have to say though that I prefer the sausage and egg mcmuffin just a little bit more... mmmmm sausages.

I find egg McMuffins to be the only food choice I can still enjoy at McDonald's. All the other stuff is so full of "strange" ingredients that I prefer not to eat any of it.

He was 89. I imagine he died of natural causes, given that none of the articles I examined about his death mentioned any cause of death, and they did mention he died at home.

Charlatan 03-27-2008 08:56 PM

I was just thinking that it would be cool if you could get egg McMuffins all day long...

I don't mean to bitch, but it says a lot about our society when this thread has more responses than the Arthur Clark thread.

Leto 03-28-2008 06:24 AM

I was trying to visit Arthur C Clarke, back in 1980. I had it on good advice that he was living in Galle, a city on the south coast of Sri Lanka, and I happened to be in the neighbourhood.

Owing to some difficulties of language, bad timing and all, I was unable to do so, but at the time he was one of my favourite authors.

During this trip, I tought my Sri Lankan friend how to make an egg mcmuffin at home. I was missing western food after 3 months, and they had all the ingredients so, for one meal at least we eschewed lentils, curry and rice, and had egg on an english muffin with cheese and ham. In the same city that Arthur C. Clarke lived.

Leto... you are the man!

I dislike McDonald's food equally as with all the rest of fast food places, but must say, the Egg McMUFFIN with sausage was a godsend when I ended up constipated.

One of those babies and like clockwork, a half an hour later was on the toilet trying to save my ass from ripping apart!!!

Kind of a shitty story whilst remembering the inventor
