so, looks like the UK is under attack...

two car bombs, and now this at Glasgow airport...

I guess its hard to judge... innocent people are always the victim, but I think civilians are under worst threat in Iraq than they are here...

Although all in all so far the terrorist attacks havent seemed very competent (although perhaps I'll regret saying that)... so far two unexploded car bombs, and this time the terrorists seem to have set themselves on fire rather than blow up the terminal.

There were lots of police in town today, and after this, i expect security everywhere to be beefed up.

Fortunatly it seems that the people involved in this are inept, lets hope it stays that way for this round of attacks.

Blazing car crashes into airport
LINK
Man 'tackled driver'
A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, police have confirmed.
Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

Strathclyde Police said two people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

A Whitehall spokesman said the incident was not being treated as a national security threat however the prime minister is being kept informed of developments and is expected to chair a meeting of COBRA - the emergency committee later.

First Minister Alex Salmond has activated emergency procedures.

The incident comes a day after two cars were found containing explosives in central London.

The cars contained petrol, gas cylinders and nails but the devices did not detonate.

One eyewitness at Glasgow Airport said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out.

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

Molotov cocktails

Eye-witness Richard Grey told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning.

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.

"The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

Stephen Clarkson said he saw people running towards him and "panicking" then noticed a crashed Cherokee jeep.

The car was ablaze before crashing into the building

He said he helped police restrain one of the men.

"It was lucky that I was there," he said.

"I managed to knock the man to the ground with my forearm and the police got on top of him and restrained him and put handcuffs on him."

Thomas Conroy, a maintenance worker at the airport believes the men deliberately tried to set the car on fire.

"It looked like they had molotov cocktails with them," he said.

"They sort of burst them round about the flames to make sure the car would go up big style.

"Within minutes it was up and the terminal caught as well."

'No accident'

Dr Rak Nandwani was at the airport building to pick up relatives when he saw a plume of black smoke.

He said: "The whole place has come to a standstill, the terminal building has been evacuated. I have spoken to my relatives and they have been moved to outside the building.

"They were told they could not pick their baggage up from the baggage collection area.

The incident happened 1515 BST on Saturday

"There must be about 50 police cars at the airport. Me and my son, along with everyone else, have been moved to the car rental area."

Taxi driver Ian Crosby said: "This was no accident. This was a deliberate attack on Glasgow Airport."

The reaction of members of the public was not to help the men in the car, but to restrain them, he told the BBC.

Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs.

A number of people are stuck on aeroplanes while others have been told they might not be able to leave the airport complex until at least 2100 BST.

Edinburgh Airport has been closed to vehicles which are being turned away on approach however, flights are operating as normal.
Most of the reports about the 2 found bombs were people sounding very nonchalant about the whole thing, though that could be the slant the media wanted.

But Britian has had plenty of experience with domestic terrorism, so in some ways I can see people being nonchalant about it.

Well, I remember the day of the July 7th bombings... certainly no one I knew was shaken by it to any extent. People were just talking about because of what we were doing in Iraq this kind of thing was going to expected and was bound to happen more. Of course, the death toll of that attack (while any death toll is tragic) was not especially high.

But most people grew up with IRA bombings being a reality - of course it is disruptive and tragic that innocent people are killed by these criminals (and the IRA and Al Qeida are both a bunch of murderers and gangsters at the heart of it in my opinion - while one group was funded by the Irish community in the US and Southern Ireland and one by Saudi religious maniacs - whatever politics they start out fighting for, they end up simply as killers of women and children)

It's odd - I walked through those same airport doors in Glasgow not long ago.

Anyway, we're booking another trip to the UK - not going to let some terrorist scum affect us.

I worry that the british people influenced by the tabloid press will pass the tipping point of tolerance of muslims. Thick twats who read the red tops are easy to influence, and the narrow minded, blinkerd middle class readers of the 'Mail' & 'Express' are almost there already.
The 'BNP' must be loving this state of high alert, they are probably knocking on doors today playing on peoples fears. 'Fuckwits'
It was different with the IRA cos it was home grown, they gave warnings most of the time, and they did'nt want to kill themselves.

Some people (Okay, my activist friend who reads into conspiracy theories too much said it) are saying the government staged it. As poorly executed as it was, maybe he's right.

He should probably take another puff on the old crack pipe.

Why is it hard for people to believe that there are bad people (not just governments) in the world who want to hurt other people to make some twisted point?

What is somewhat concerning to me about these attacks is that a doctor was apparently involved.

We understand when it is some young, disaffected radical, someone without a future easily persuaded by the rantings of some imam - we don't approve but we get it. You think you have nothing to live for and you're likely to do stupid things and not care who you harm along the way.

But when a doctor - an educated, intelligent person with a future - gets involved (not to mention his capacity to inflict harm on people within his care on a day-to-day basis), that is very worrying.

Ha. Yeah I think they stuffed this up. I can't quite see that putting petrol in a car is much of an attack. And didn't they use a mercedes? That's an expensive delivery device I'd have thought.

Of course, I've got safety of distance in that I'm on the other side of the world. But thinking historically, this is, er, not quite the Battle of Britain is it. I mean, UK has been under much worse attack and has come through. This seems no more major than a car accident.

Still... More and more I just think these guys are nuts. Through and through.

They screwed it up to be sure, but what they were going for was essentially a fuel air explosion which - when done right - is devestating. Had these things gone off, we'd be talking hundreds of casualties. But it's very tricky to pull off, even trained military explosives experts find it a hard task. For amateurs like these ass-hats, its extremely hard.

UK chaps: On the anniversary of the 7/7 tragedy, I want to say how sorry I am as an American. Bush pulled Blair's choke chain and now you're getting it worse than we are. It seems like just as the Irish calm down, someone else steps up. It's not fair, and I hope things get safe there soon.
