I think I bought a crappy suit...

My sister is getting married and she wants me to wear a suit to the event. So, I went out and pretty much bought the first suit I found. However, for some reason, it didn't occur to me to scrutinize the thing in the store (the saleswoman wasn't exactly encouraging me to shop around) and I can't help but notice, while examining the thing in the privacy of my own home, that the suit kind of looks ridiculous in any other pose than one would take if they were stuffed in a coffin.
In particular, the sleeves seem to be attached to the body rather low and I can't believe people wear clothing with padded shoulders. Is this for real? Is this what a suit is actually like or did I just buy a crappy suit? People on TV don't look too bad in their suits so I think it might just be me...
Does anyone have any experience with these things?
Thank you...

Sounds like a crappy suit and I hope you can take it back.

I've had very good luck with Mens Warehouse if they are in your area. Not over priced and got a very nice suit. They are good at matching shirts etc as well, and will of course assume you want the selections, just tell them one.

Oh and mine doesn't have padded shoulders Last time I think I had a suit with them I was maybe 14.

Seconded about Men's Warehouse. I've found their salespeople to be very knowledgable and helpful, and their prices are very decent.

I thought only women's clothing had shoulder pads?

some men like shoulderpads as it squares out their shoulders, giving a broader shoulder and chest appearance.

while one cannot fault design or style of a suit, what makes a crappy suit is really material and workmanship, sewing of the pieces and the linings. Most cheap suits or any clothing, have the least amount of selveages, which is where each piece of material piece meets the next. The reason why it's important on better suits, is because over time you can "let out" parts of it as you gain weight or change shape.

I do love mens wearhouse, very attentive staff and very knowledgable in styles and workmanship.

take a picture of yourself in the suit and post it... we'll be gentle. promise.

I don't think we have Men's Warehouse in Toronto.

It does sound like you bought a cheap suit. Try and take it back if you can.

How much are you planning to wear the suit? You don't want to buy a super-expensive suit if you are just going to wear it to the wedding and the occasional job interview.

I would try the following places for affordable but reasonably well made suits: Moore's or Tip Top.

If you don't get a sales person who measures you, or is willing to alter the suit, leave the store.

If you want something a little more stylish and not too expensive, you can try this place: GrReat stuff 870 Queen West, 416-533-7680 . It might be a little out of your way but the selection is very good and the prices are reasonable.

There are no Men's Wearhouse stores in Canada; a few near the border, but that's it. However, their website does recommend Moore's "for our Canadian friends." And Men's Wearhouse is a class operation for affordable suits; so if they _and_ Charlatan recommend Moore's, it must be pretty good.
