One Video That May or May Not Change Your View of the Tuba

Fnug: it sounds like something you'd buy at Ikea, but it's a tuba solo.

Actually, I have no idea if this will change the way you think of the tuba. I'd be kinda astonished if you thought of the tuba at all. Still, this video is neat. The player is Oystein Baadsvik. I've seen him do this live, and he's tremendously witty and nice.

Have you heard the Youngblood Brass Band? Under the Multimedia section of that site, download the studio version of Brooklyn. Jump to 3:40 in that song, and you'll hear a tuba imitating a turntable scratching.

Very cool :)

I just realized that a few things may not be apparent to a layman.

1) He is singing and playing the tuba at the same time. That's not normal.
2) We don't all dance around like that.
3) We definitely don't beatbox with our tubas on a regular basis.

LOL, I dunno ubertuber...I've known quite a few tuba players, and I could have sworn at least a few of them danced around like that :p

Very cool indeed - the tuba for me (and that reflects my very.....very limited experience) is an instrument that is used in marching bands. It's is refreshing to see that it can be used that way - thanks for "opening my eyes"...

Most tubas in marching bands are sousaphones which, while still technically a tuba, is generally used in a very different style of play than a concert tuba.

I'll admit to not being up on the professional tuba world myself, but as a brass player I am quite impressed by his range and tone. Good stuff.
