Bands with two-word names

Why does every stupid premanufactured top-40/pop/rock/nu-metal/"punk" band name consist of two words that make little to no sense together? Is that some kind of new mandatory naming convention for all sucky made-for-radio bands?

Switchfoot
Finger 11
Nonpoint
Click Five
Coldplay
Crossfade
Yellowcard
Shinedown
...the list goes on...

Seriously, what is the deal with that?

Steely Dan! -- Definitely the ultimate anti-premanufactured band.

That and you could probably say that, along with their music, their names aren't entirely original nor creative.

What about:

Judas Priest
Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Def Leppard
Bon Jovi
Rolling Stones

That's good music there!

Don't forget:

Matchbox 20
Lifehouse
Nickleback
Mudvane

As for Finger 11, their original name was the "Rainbow Butt Monkeys" !

"make little or no sense"? Crossfade: that's an audio term. Yellowcard: that's soccer. Nonpoint: that's an environmental term for an 'area source'. Switchfoot: sounds like skateboard or something similar. I can probably come up with answers for the rest of them.

I don't understand this rant.

Yellowcard - given in soccer as a penalty
Finger 11 - the extra finger; associated with being out-of-place
Crossfade - an audio effect
Shinedown - light with a source above the area that it is lighting

I have to admit, don't know about the rest, but those ones make perfect sense to me.

Lifehouse seems to be a play on "lighthouse" but with a delicious Christian twist.
Nickelback had something to do with a store in their hometown, yadda yadda.

Also, evidence of these bands being "premanufactured" would be nice. One thing that irritates the shit out of me is music nerd elitism bred in people who listen exclusively to unpopular music because anything popular must suck.

I doubt you're trying to call these bands raw, but that's about as much as I can get out of the term premanufactured.

but wasn't the term Steely Dan a nick name for a vibrator? It was kinda risque. So was 10cc, which is supposed to be the average volume of semen ejaculated by a human male.

I like Finger Eleven. They're one of the better nu-metal bands out there, self-titled album aside.

Yeah, I know that's not saying much.

Hah didn't even consider that. No, I just meant the large buildings that help guide ships.

Yes; the name Steely Dan was taken from the novel Naked Lunch:
Quote:
The band's name (like a number of others) is derived from the works of William S. Burroughs: Steely Dan is the name of a steam-powered dildo that appeared in Burroughs' book Naked Lunch. Fagen once explained, "We just wanted to give the band a little more thrust than most other bands."

I'm exactly the same way. I listen to what I like, that is the only requirement...and I can't understand why anyone would do anything else.
