Anyone have the new PS2 yet?

I'm thinking about getting a PS2, but I'm wondering whether it would be better to get an old style (possibly used, but probably new) or one of the newer ones. Before they were out, I was sure the new one would be what I would want - it's smaller, faster, lighter, and much nicer looking. And it has built in ethernet support. Who cares if it doesn't have a hard drive? I won't be playing any MMORPGs on it anyway.

However. Many people are now saying that it has severe issues. The one I hear most often is overheating, but many people say that's not actually a problem. Others vaguely reference "compatibility issues" or other non-specific problems, but I'm inclined to ignore those complaints, seeing as they give no evidence.

So who here has one? Or who has played one? Any problems? Would it be worth it to get? Should I just get an X-Box instead?

Note: if you give a fanboy response, you will be added to my ignore list and I won't bother to read what you say. I want discussion, not flaming. Thanks.

Smartest thing you said in that whole post

Xbox load faster and got 10x better graphics. Or you could wait for a XBOX2 or a PS3

To be quite honest if you do nto care about the lack of hdd support and really want a PS2 go ahead and grab the new "slim" PS2. While Sony will NEVER admit that something was wrong with any of their systems they all seem to overhear and break down then a "new" version comes out which miraculously addresses all of these issues AND costs less. I am Sony through and through but am thinking about picking up a used Xbox just to play Halo2 and some of the other titles that are not cross plat formed.

I don't understand the fuss about the new PS2. It's smaller. So what.

Just buy a regular PS2 for cheaper.

I just picked one up last week. Have been very happy with it, and not had a single problem. My only complaint with it is that it has a laptop esque a/c adapter, and I hate those things to all get out. Other than that, I love it.

I've had mine nearly a week now and I'm above-averagely pleased with it.

Pros:

Very small.
No fan noise.
Plays DVDs that the old PS2 wouldn't.
New DVD functions.
*N/A - I got two free games with it (GTA:SA & Burnout3)

Cons:

Top-loader.
Feels like the spindle is going to break when changing discs (not a problem yet, since GTA:SA rarely leaves the tray).
Should have had a light on the eject button.

The external power brick isn't a problem for me. The brick is located next to the power end and there's plenty cable between it and the PS2.

It was a deal where I gave them my old PS2 (which had the worst case of the Disc Read Error Disease ever) and £104.99 for a pre-ordered PS2, GTA:SA and a choice between one of 4 or 5 other games.

Twas, indeed, a bargain.

You know, I own all three major consoles, but I would never ask what system I want. My question is "What games do I want?"

You need to check out the lineup and see what camp you're in. You buy a system to play games. What games do you want to play?

I think he said no fanboy responses.

I'd buy anything but a used PS2. As for which model, if my PS2 broke, I'd probably buy one of the new ones, simply because they look cool and the old PS2 version's CD-ROM tray and laser are very unreliable (I've been through 3 PS2's since it came out).

I work at gamestop, and right now we are having a special that gives you a new ps2 for 99 bucks. Its not going on too much longer though, and im sure it varies by store!

DEFINITELY varies by store. I work at a GameStop and we definitely don't have a $99 NEW PS2! Otherwise I'd definitely have it right now

Electronics Boutique was running a trade in special last month where you could get $100 for a working "old" ps2 and then trade in up to 5 games for $10 store credit each, so my roommate basically traded all that in for a new slim ps2. As far as overheating or anything else, we almost always have someone in our room playing either GTA:SA or burnout3 and we have had no problems yet.
