cheap electric guitar + better pickups = better sound? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Hey all! I dusted off my $200 ibanez grx-45 that i've had for a few years, and am thinking about making "mods" to it. It's a double cutaway, h-s-s pickup configuration. Not really too sure what kind of wood is used, though. My basic question is, if I upgrade the pickups, will I hear an improvement, or am I better off buying a multi-effects pedal? I want this guitar to sound it's most awesome, so it won't be forgotten again.
Just in case you need to know, I use a 45-watt Brownsville amp. The only other guitar I've played was a Squier strat, so I don't really know how it would handle with a Telecaster or les paul.

And something a bit off topic: I'm thinking about adding another guitar to my collection, but I admit I'm pretty cheap. What's the best, "cheap" guitar you've come across, and what companies are the best to check out? I'm really looking towards hollow body electric, like a Casino. I know SamAsh have their own "Carlo Robelli" line, and I've heard they're really good for the price. I'm also looking towards a Samick or Silvertone hollowbody that I've seen online. Any suggestions?

Pickups are some of the best things you can put in a guitar.....most guitar players that I know that are pretty much professional players just put good pickups and hardware in really cheap guitars...and when they wear them out (yes they play that much that the guitar is just trashed) they just throw the guts in another guitar.
