How To: Make an Animated Avatar

I can make frame to frame animated avatars but how do you take a short part of a movie or already made animation and turn it into an avatar?

I know it takes software- search the net, I know I've seen gif sites that sell or lead you to downloadable software- some isn't cheap, but there might be a way to download a trial version to mess with. I may do that myself.

Try the Flix package from http://www.wildform.com/
You may need to import you video into Flash first, but I'm pretty sure you can export to Animated .GIF, well at least you could in the old versions....

Another package which may also do the trick is Swish from http://www.swishzone.com/

yeah i think adobe imageready will do it too, but I know for sure that Jasc's Animation Shop Pro does it. I might look into it more myself.
