How hot is the laptop getting? While a little heat should be expected, you shouldn't tolerate temps that lead to burns or performance drops. While cooling pads and advances thermal compounds may successfully lower temps and alleviate the problem they aren't exactly permanent fixes.

List the laptop specs here and search sites like Google and Epinions for reviews on the laptop you have - see if others have complained about over-heating issues...

You may be better off returning it and saving yourself the $ and a few headaches.

Hi manic,

The laptop is a dell 1501 series, nothing fancy.

2.0 ghz
1 gig ram
60 gig hd
ati graphics 1150
15.4 widescreen

My aunt and i ordered 2 of these at the same time. I wanted a laptop just to screw around with as this model comes with built in wireless. (love the freedom of not sitting at my desk anymore ) So for giggles i installed WOW and to my surprise it runs very well. Thats when the laptop starts to get hot. So i figured ill get somthing to help cool it and give my desktop machine to my son. He'll be happy to play with dad

Thanks for the links, Ill get on em and start digging now that i have a starting point.

You will notice that it is not called a laptop by the manufacturer, but a notebook. This is because modern laptops are not actually meant to be used in your lap - otherwise their fan intakes would not be right where your legs go. This is stupid, I know, but the coolpad will solve your problem.

I bulit one from a sheet of MDF and a spare piece of 1x2" timber (both left over from carpentry projects).
