Looking for serializing file catalog program

Simple stuff but the haystack is big.

I need a windows program that'll catalog inserted discs and assign a unique serial/identifier to each, tagging catalogged files with that identifier. The idea is to create a list, then be able to search for a file and get a disc number to pull off the shelf.

Stand-alone exe or access/VB, whatever. If the catalog isn't portable ideally it'll be exportable.

It's been done many hundreds of times. I just know something bad will happen if I reinvent this wheel.

Exactly, but for data. No specific theme for any volume and several to many files per volume.

The ideal process will be insert disc, remove disc and label with the auto-generated serial number, repeat.

Later, a user would search for file, see serial number, and pull the matching disc from its ordered shelf.

Honestly, I didn't search beyond trying a few that sounded close. No go. I'm hoping one of you could turn me onto something cool. If I start writing something, well then I'd have to fix it. You know how that goes.

i'll have to think about this a bit, but there are applications, I just don't know of them off the top of my head.

After trying a couple other programs that didn't quite make it I pushing them toward the simple route. I wrote a little snippet to extract the files and volume data and write to an access database. My code is launched by an autoplay handler. They're comfortable with access so messing with dupes, categories, etc. will be familiar.

Still have to script the installer but this should keep my junk to a minimum.

Famous last words.
