Ever feel like everyone likes something and you don't?

This is the place to vent.

I'll start: I really don't care for podcasts.

They remind me of talk radio, which I also don't like. If I'm going to be listening to something, it's going to be music. Music lights my fire. Hearing people jabber on about topics, even subjects I enjoy, simply bores me.

I don't want to endure someone else's inside jokes or pacing in which whatever they're discussing could have been written out in a document I could have taken a few minutes to read instead of being a captive audience for 30+ minutes.

I like some podcasts because they remind me of University lectures, which I also like.

I dislike meat. Just not my thing.

    Great topic.
I'm with you on the podcasts. I've listened to exactly 2 in my life, both done by one of my best buddies who is a financial planner.

    Risotto.
Why is this a popular dish?
I just find it boring beyond belief.
I get excited about going to nice restaurants because we don't get to do it that often. Then I see someone there order risotto......

The only time I get excited about a rice dish is rice pilaf, which I like loaded with the ingredients that aren't rice. Some rice casserole dishes are good...when they're loaded with other ingredients.

Sci-Fi. It doesn't hold my interest reading it. When I watch it, & read it, the plot needs to move quickly and I don't want to have to keeps notes of too many characters & sub-plots.

I'm okay with "spoilers." The only things they "spoil" are surprise and suspense, which I'm not that into. I prefer anticipation and overthinking things.

Grits. They might be a Southern staple for some, but not in the Texas household I grew up in.

Hominy. Bloated corn as far as I'm concerned.

Yankee here, and I've never understood the love for both.
I figured you had to grow up eating those two things to like them.

I have to admit, I don't care for the Lord of the Rings, in either book or film form.

To qualify this statement, I adored The Hobbit as a child and still have my paperback copy which I still re-read to this day. It took me a while to get to Fellowship of the Ring (about 6 or 7 years, I must have been about 15) and when I finally did, I was bored out of my mind.

The Hobbit was a rip-roaring adventure full of danger, battles and suspenseful sequences; Fellowship was a lot of walking & talking. Such was my experience that I didn't bother with the next book for 30 years.

When they announced a film version of Fellowship, I was puzzled as to why they'd choose such a yawnfest to start a franchise, but I am in the minority here. When I saw the film, it was as dull as the book.

I skipped the rest of the trilogy for a few years until someone insisted I watch Two Towers. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed it... but when the film ended, I felt satisfied with no desire to go on to the last movie. Someone upgraded their disc collection to Blu-Ray and gave me their DVD of Return of the King, which I let collect dust for about 15 years until I finally realized I wasn't ever going to watch it, so I sold it.

A few years back I picked up a paperback copy of Two Towers, expecting great things since the book is usually better than the movie.

I was impressed at how unimpressive it was. This solidified my decision to not ever bother with the third book.

I'm deeply offended , but I can't bring myself to think of you as my enemy :) :D :p.

Seriously, infuencers bother me immensely. I prefer the old term shills. Many people forget how Bill Gates once tried to control all/most of PC software.

I was also struck by how boring the second book was (compared to anything, not just the exciting first book). And Tolkien definitely introduced way too many characters for my weak public school system mind.

One of my SILs became obsessed getting pregnant.
She cheated on her husband to get pregnant (long story).
She had premature delivery problems, nearly lost "her" baby son.

Became totally obsessed with her precious snowflake, her life became his life.

Lost her husband when he had DNA testing done on their/ "her" son, along with other factors such as her having two boytoys on the side.

"Her" son got the hell away from her once he was old enough.

They now communicate mostly through social media.

Interesting note: Her son transgendered into her daughter (this didn't surprise me at all).

A thought occurred to me in response to another thread, but it actually fits better here.

    [Quote stuff removed]

Thread hijack alert (but sort of related)!

Somebody (edit: MMG) made a post about not liking the last two books in Tolkien's epic trilogy, which I agreed with. A few years back I ran across a guide to help people keep track of the 1,737* characters he introduces, & I was tempted to buy it (Goodwill store, maybe $4.00 tops) & try reading the trilogy again. But I wasn't that tempted.

    * Hyperbole.

    THIS.

Not to sound pretentious, but as human beings, we should be multifaceted. Are there one or two things that REALLY light your fire? That's a good start. Anything else that comes a close second, or third? Like, four or five more things? No? Well, then you should diversify a bit. If your political leanings/one sports team/favorite popular movie is all that you are... well, that's not good.

Back on track: I hate the Mummy movies. I mean, I really hate them. With a passion.

Just to clarify: Brendan Frasier is a national treasure. I also think Arnold Vosloo is awesome. But those first two films (I didn't bother with the third one, having learned my lesson) are excruciating! I saw the first one out of curiosity and found it forgettable.

Then the sequel came out and I didn't expect much- I think I rented it out of boredom and was pissed at how insulting I found it.

My co-workers, who think the series is wonderful, haven't seen the Indiana Jones films. 'Nuff said.

On the plus side, the anger I felt after watching the sequel made me scour the internet looking for people who appreciated the Indy movies, which led me to discover message boards. (Which eventually led me here to the TFP.)

Rick O'Connell could kick Indiana Jones' ass with one arm tied behind his back!

Rick O'Connell is also by far a superior archeologist over Indiana Jones!!

Rick O'Connell is also much better looking than Indiana Jones!!!

Seriously, The Mummy has its appeal & merits, but it is lightweight compared to the first Indiana Jones film.

I think the thing I liked the most about The Mummy movies is that they stayed together as a couple.
So many of those movies have the lead male character get a different girl with every movie (especially when they fridge the previous heroine).
They were a couple and a pretty good one, even having a kid, who didn't just pop up out of nowhere like the one in the Indiana Jones movies.
That and they loved her brother despite him being a major POS.
He was working on being better which also made the movies interesting, plus his catty observations on the various situations they got into were priceless.

Certainly not as strong as the Indiana Jones movies but a good second.
