What do you enjoy blowing up on this holiday?

Growing up in California where fireworks for home use are not permitted due to fire hazards, I didn't even play with sparklers until I was 21. Their novelty hasn't worn off, and I'm still in love with those little fizzly things, but I also love watching incredible displays from professional shows. I've never seen as many fireworks in-person as I do here every year in the midwest. Since we live on a hill, from our place we can see 3 or so major displays. My favorite that I've been to was the Red White and Blue Ash concert and firework show, where we were directly under the fireworks, and covered in ash by the time we went home.

I'm sure that others are much more interested in setting off their own exciting fireworks displays.

What fiery treats draw your attention at the local fireworks shop?
Have you ever participated in planning or setting off any large-scale fireworks, as we see at professional shows?
What safety measures do you take?

I put this thread in Weapons because I figured that those who enjoy shooting / stabbing things might also enjoy the big bangs and explosions that come along with fireworks.

I take it by California you mean the central/southern half. Because in the northern part of the state they're a bit more lax so long as fire season isn't too bad. That said, when I moved up into the trees I'd have to go into town if I wanted to set off fireworks and see the big shows. Lassen County fairgrounds would always put on a show that could be seen for miles. In recent years, Diamond Mountain Casino has also put on shows (note: I'm referring to Susanville, CA here). Anyway, up until college I would always do the firework/shows thing with my family.

This year, I'm up in Klamath Falls, OR, doing summer session at my university. Fireworks are forbidden on campus, but the city should be doing a display tonight, and I've seen firework stands at all major retailers. I don't know what I want to do tonight. Either I'll climb the hill behind campus and watch from there, or I'll drive into town and blow $20 on fireworks in the Super-WalMart parking lot for shits and giggles.

Anyway, my favorite type of firework is the Ground Flower. It's a little cylindrical tube that you lay on the ground and light. Once the fuse is depleted, it ignites, and the firework itself starts to spin from the ejection of gases in the tube. Alternating colors of light spray out of it as it dances along the ground. Though I'll admit, the bloody thing would scare the hell out of me as a kid.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

We have a quiet summer cabin on a lake.
With the town's approval, the lake association collects money and puts on an annual fireworks display. They're shot off an island in the lake and we have the perfect viewing angle.
This year it is on Friday July 6.
It is one of my favorite evenings of the year.
We typically have a small group of close friends over, throw something yummy on the grill, and lounge lakeside waiting for dark.
It's probably the most relaxed I feel all year long.

In regards to the San Diego thing, at least people still had fun even if the whole thing was a fiasco. As for me, my 4th didn't turn out as well as I wanted it to, but hey, I got to light off six ground flowers at once. That was cool.
