You carry the bigger guns so you can "acquire" as needed from those that do have them after everything goes to hell in a handbasket. And you never know when you might need to cap a zombie or 12 with a well placed headshot. And even better you can use the self/home defense argument for having the desert eagle with .50 cal depleted uranium rounds until it happens.
(yes they are just for larger anti tank rounds and not actually available in that size but they would make "ideal" home defense if you do not mind shooting the round through the next house or three around you)
