George Zimmerman was most likely a legally armed douchebag turned criminal. See where I'm going with this?

So there are no legally armed douchebags that aren't criminals? That's a stretch if you ask me.

Quite the contrary, invincible citizen: the line between legally armed douche bag and criminal douche bag requires a criminal action.

Labeling people that legally carry guns as "potential douche bags" or "potential criminals" is a little ridiculous for obvious reasons.

Being a douche bag isn't a crime. It may be an indicator of a potential criminal but this isn't Minority Report for gun racists.

But I never said that legally armed douchebags are potential criminals. I just mentioned, tongue-in-cheek style, that maybe while I am on the lookout for criminals, I should also be on the lookout for douchebags who happen to carry guns around. Zimmerman, whom you called a douchebag yourself, was legally permitted to carry a firearm. Telling a douchebag that they are legally able to carry a gun around probably implies to a few douchebags out there that they are not douchebags and are fully capable of determining when and when not to use their weapon. For all your awareness of potential danger out there, I find it hard to believe that you are really that ignorant of all the stupid that is going on out there.

But if you outlaw douchebags from owning guns, only outlaw douchebags will own guns.

I think that's where I'm uncomfortable with certain peoples' stance on gun ownership--equivocating being armed with criminality.

    Equivocating?

That aside, I don't think anyone was doing what I think you meant. It was more a discussion of douchebags (nasty expression!).

There's a certain amount of polarisation that comes in these debates.

I, for example, like guns. In fact, I like a lot of weapons (guns, bows and blades, mostly). However, I'm not really in favour of people carrying them in public places for "protection" (except in special circumstances). I'm especially not in favour of it if there is no real test required to gain a licence.

That makes me an anti-gun hippy. I'm cool with the "hippy" part.

that's bullshit. no where did I imply that.
why don't you try to address what I actually said.
normal, stupid people can't always be trusted.
and before you get all puffed up, remind yourself that I'm not trying to take your guns away any more than I am trying to take cars away from people.
but the fact remains people do stupid shit with dangerous things just as much as criminal people do criminal things.

I fear douche bags because they are unpredictable with our without guns. I mean don't you encounter them on the highways and roads too? Douche bags are douche bags.

as usual, we are faced with an inability to deal with anything other than a 'oh my, they want my guns' reaction.

Well, "if we just took away all the guns, we'd all be safe" is, unfortunately, the usual knee-jerk reaction to any high profile...uh... incident that involves a gun.

Relax. I'm simply summarizing your statement with a fairly accurate characterization. Obviously, you disagree with it.

As applied to this case, I'm still going to point out that, in light of the evidence to date, no one really knows what happened. Zimmerman could have brusquely confronted Martin, and got a well deserved ass-whuppin in return. Zimmerman could have very well gave a "hi, what are you doing here?" approach that Martin rebuffed. Zimmerman could have been walking away and gotten attacked from behind; Zimmerman could also have very well attacked Martin and gotten his ass handed to him.

That someone often calls the cops is not necessarily a bad thing either. On one hand you have Zimmerman, on the other, Kitty Genovese.

Food for thought, and there's still the underlying discomfort that you obviously have with non-law enforcement with guns.

Sorry, but I have a little problem with my words being conflated with someone else's kneejerk reaction.

And, kirstang, there was nothing accurate about your characterization of my statement. And I'm having a little trouble understanding what you mean by your last statement. Non-law enforcement with guns? That can't be what it sounds like.

Ah, yes! Kinda like the USA PATRIOT Act of 9/11. "Shit-shit, somebody do something. The proles are watching us."

/19 other shooting deaths that week ignored because they're just criminals doing criminal things with criminal guns
