I loved the original Earthsea trilogy. I thought they were beautiful pieces of work, elegant in their simplicity. The additions were, IMO, vastly underwhelming. The set of short stories was variable, though the good ones were decent. The two other novels were just disappointing. They completely lacked the authentic folkloric quality that made the original trilogy so potent.

So glad to hear you are reading this series -
The Tombs of Atuan is a departure into another fab realm of prose and atmosphere. ( will resist the urge to say more)

I have only read the first three.

....forgot to say what i am reading.
    The Edge of the Storm
    by Agustín Yáñez
    translated by Ethel Brinton

    "the eighteen-month period immediately preceding
    the Mexican Revolution of 1910"

its dense prose and nonlinear style.....is pissing me off.
    this is a good thing.
my wheels have been far too complacent traveling inside the well worn linear paths,
    for decades.

I freaking love the Dresden Files! They went from guilty pleasure to unabashed fan jonesage within three or four books. The next one isn't due out until late next year, and it's just killing me....

I've been meaning to sample both this and his Codex Alera series. Both are supposed to be top notch for long series.

Glad to see the Dresden love. I just finished watching the third episode of the TV show. Not bad, but not too good either.

I've read the first 2 (or 3) Dresden books. My only complaint is that every book he is in terrible danger and exhausted but somehow manages to do one last spell to save the day. Certainly not high-brow literature but well worth a read. I keep meaning to get the TV series, but haven't done it yet.

I finished the 3 Mistborn novels. I really enjoyed the first one, but found the remaining 2 seemed to drag on a little too long - It is almost like he had enough story for 2 books, but wanted to write a trilogy. I kept telling the author (in my head) to "get on with it!". I'm torn as to whether I'd actually recommend this series.

"A Genius for Deception: How Cunning Helped the British Win Two World Wars" by Nichols Rankin

Not really the page turner the title makes it sound like, but interesting nonetheless.

I was talking to my friend who turned me on to the Dresden files and I said that its a formula. He agreed. We both like the explainations of magic and the supernatural world more than anything else. Here is too hoping the formula gets broken, as its becoming trite.

I've been reading a lot of Robert Ludlum books lately. I most recently finished the Aquitaine Progression and the Rhinemann Exchange.

I read them after being recommended here because of the links to Harry Potter

I really like the system of magic and it made sense (not logically but philosophically I mean) and personally (although I suppose I am not a teen) I found the story a lot more interesting than the 100 pages of Twilight I was able to read before I gave up.

I am reading Zombies and Shit by Carlton Mellick III. I have to say, it's pretty entertaining, and has some funny stuff in it, so far.

I am just rattling through the Hunger Games trilogy; I started book one last Thursday after seeing the movie, and have got a couple of dozen pages of book three left.

I was very impressed with how true to the book the film was (but I guess that this is due to the author being part of the script writing team). Book one contains a load of extra material that makes more sense of elements in the film, without detracting from it.

Highly recommend them to anyone - my daughter may well get them next.

Yeah, I never could get into the Erikson books for that very reason. Somehow I was always able to keep everything straight in the Ice and Fire series, but about halfway through the second Malazan book, I was completely lost.

I'm going to start The Darkest Road this evening. It's the third and final book of The Fionavar Tapestry.

It's turning out to be a very good series. I didn't really know what to expect going into it, but I'm actually quite surprised at how it has unfolded so far. I've mentioned the comparisons to Tolkien and Lewis in terms of the tools of fantasy it uses. However, Kay does a fantastic job in weaving a mythological tale in such a way to make it a fresh and intriguing read in the genre.

The worldbuilding is amazing, and the story doesn't rely too heavily on plot events to carry the story forward. I have no idea how the story is going to turn out. There is little that is clichéd or predictable in this series. I really don't know what will be found down the Darkest Road.

If you love quality fantasy, I will again highly recommend reading this.

Im struggling with it a bit to be honest, the story itself is interesting (I'm about 75 pages in) but I am just struggling with the characterisation and I guess the standard of writing.

I mean I am realistic, I know I am reading a fantasy book and I dont expect it to read like it was written by Dostoyevsky, but I am finding this book hard to like. Vin I can tolerate. I just cannot suspend disbelief enough to read Kelsier as a real person at the moment. I'll give it another few chapters though.
