What is your favorite sound?

Last night, I made marmalade and canned it. When I took the hot jars out of the canning pot, they began to cool and seal: ping, ping, ping. As I listened to my jars sealing shut, I reflected on how much I love the sound of jars sealing. I look forward to listening to that sound every time I can something. This morning on Facebook, Ball Canning posted: Fact: there's no better sound in this world than the PING of a sealed jar. "Like" if you agree!

To me, it's the sound of productivity. Canning is not difficult, but it is an investment of time, and it is quite a process. I spent about 3 hours of my evening making marmalade and putting it up. The ping comes at the very end, sometimes right away, right after that hot jar has come out of the canner, sometimes later, when you're in the midst of cleaning up. It's the immediate reward for all of the work--eating the delicious things you've made comes later.

What about you? What are some of your favorite sounds and why? I have more sounds than just the ping! of a jar sealing, but I'll add those later as the conversation develops.

Mine is a Ping! as well.

The sound of bullets hitting steel targets.

It's the instant feedback that curls my toes.

Video: Sound starting at 1:00 and on.

A Harley! Extra special is when I look and it's a long hair, tattoo dude with long legs, teeth, no belly and gives a little nod.

Also the sound of thunder and feeling the rumble...

I can't pick one sound. Context is everything.

    Two that come to mind:

    1. The sounds of water's natural movements: rain, waves crashing/lapping, rivers running, streams trickling, waterfalls...uh...falling, etc.
    2. The sound of metal ringing, e.g., a longsword being drawn from a scabbard, swordplay in general, etc.

I was going to say also: that sound of the repetitive slapping of flesh, during sex in general and during doggystyle in particular.

My favorite sound goes with my favorite smell.

The sound of a good meat sizzling in the kitchen or on the grill...

Not a favourite but it is burned in my head after hearing it so much from transferring NBC radio shows from tapes.
The familiar chimes that NBC played after every show to announce the end. They started the practice after the Jack Benny Program ran a bit long enough times and used up some of the airtime allotted for following programs. They had enough complaints and dealt with it. I could find a sample very easily in my collection and upload but not inclined to this very second.

Natural sound? That's definitely gotta be thunder. Manufactured sound? It's either gotta be the THX sound or Fox's NFL music. Both those sounds mean I'm about to be entertained for hours.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

There is a gentle hum that comes from a quality bicycle tire, ridden at a high rate of speed.
Conditions have to be just right to hear it. No traffic, no wind. Just a beautiful low hum.

I like a gentle breezy late afternoon with the wind soughing through the slightly long grass, and the crickets and other insects putting us to sleep for the night.
It kind of makes a whole sound.

    ooh, good thread.

Rain and thunder are definitely favorites. I love to sleep with the windows open during a storm. It's somehow both sexy AND soothing at the same time.

The crack of a baseball bat...mmm, summer.

And this, although I never get to hear it anymore...except when I'm feeling nostalgic and look the sound up on youtube.

Rain as cliche as it is, will always be my favourite.... followed by a good solid ping off the post by a hockey puck.

Another sound I thought of reading this thread that I haven't thought of for years...
When we played kick-ball in school, the sound made when you really connected a solid kick to the ball that sent it to the outfield and brought in some runners. It was a sort of hollow ringing of rubber. Anyone remember that?

Like everyone else, I like the deep, rolling rumble of thunder that follows the spectacular lighting of the horizon from a flash of lightning.

I love the haunting, melodic warbling of the loons on the lake on a calm, quiet morning out at the lake, and again just at dusk.
