The book is more clear on this: Katniss comes to realize (despite her stubbornness) that she must put on an act to appease the Capitol in the Hunger Games. (It all plays into her reluctance to give into their hegemony that enables their decadence.) Haymitch drills it into her that if she wants to survive, she's going to have to impress the sponsors.

The gifts that come from the sponsors? She got those directly from putting on an act, a show for the audience/sponsors. It becomes more murky and confusing for her by the end because of her ordeal with Peeta to win the Games, but at first her number one motivation was to win so that she could return to look after her family. Of course, by the end, Peeta feels he's essentially been "played," except Katniss isn't so sure about it all...setting the stage for the love triangle that comes later (I've heard).

    Or something like that.

    Dude...shoulda read the book... :p

I think I would read the book. The comments here are pretty mixed, but I am curious enough (and enjoyed the film enough) to be interested in the details they couldn't fit into 2 hours.

all the inner dialogue. There is lots of it. She's a teen. It's part of being a teen, she questions everything on her head.

That is not in the movie. I was hoping they would do something to show more of how thoughtful and thoughtless she is in the book.

Not sure if I would have seen the film had my son (on spring break) not been willing to see it. We three (son, me, spouse) enjoyed it. I too, am all for 'Bella' to be stricken from our collective memories. Son said he was pleased that Katniss unlike Bella, doesn't hook up with 'emotionally abusive men.' He downloaded the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy as soon as we got in the car to head home. It sounds as if it would be worth reading to pick up things like
Katniss faked the rombance with Peeta, hearing her interior dialogue that revealed just how terrified she was, and that the dog-like pack sent to kill them were in fact previous (dead) Tributes. The animals were described in the books as having distinctly human eyes, which I missed completely in the film.
If I had to rate it I'd give it a 'B.'
Besides Katniss, my favourite character was 'Cinna.' Blew my mind to find he was played by Lenny Kravitz.

This is why I felt it was rushed. I haven't reread the book (again) yet, but I seem to remember Katniss and Rue chilling together for a few days. The thing with her and Peeta was a total play for the cameras. It's implied that he's always been in love with her, but she pretty much starts out using the love story to get sponsors/fool the Capitol. And I think it was either Cinna's (not me, I need to say that :) ) or Haymitch's idea that they present themselves as a united front from the beginning, hold hands during the parade, and all that.

And hell, that's a GREAT setting for a love story. Everything you love is gone, and you might very well be dead tomorrow. Get it while you can, yo.

Edit: I really need to remember to refresh before posting.

Thank you, snowy ! I vaguely remember seeing the link on FB, but didn't have time to read it, and I couldn't remember who had posted it. Awesome.

The newest, and final, trailer for Catching Fire came out yesterday.

The second book is much more intense than the first, and I'm hoping the movie reflects that. I was slightly disappointed with the first movie, but I will still be going to see the second. November 22nd, w00t!

I didn't care for the direction or cinematography of the first film. I'm hoping it's better in the second. I'm glad that The Avengers came out shortly after The Hunger Games, as I needed some decent directing to cleanse my palate.

I reread Catching Fire (again) in preparation for the movie coming out...next weekend, woohoo!

I'd forgotten that, relatively speaking, they don't spend much time in the Arena at all. The trailers I've seen (and granted, I haven't seen ALL of them) have the tributes in their blue jumpsuits, so I wonder how that's going to go. All of the emotionally hard-hitting stuff hits while they're still in District 12, I think (well, and the Victory Tour.) And didn't they show the riot that happens in District 11 in the first movie? Hmmm.

I'm developing an unhealthy obsession over Jennifer Lawrence to a degree not seen since my obsession over Kate Beckinsale.

I'm hoping this next instalment continues its course of including the good parts of the book while leaving out some of the bad parts.

I watched the first film for five minutes, then had to restart with the Rifftrax audio track turned up and the normal volume down with subtitles. I enjoyed the film very much, especially how many jokes Mike, Kevin, and Bill make about Woody's hair and Lenny Kravitz.
The rest of the trilogy sounded somewhat interesting but I did only read the plot summary version on Wikipedia.

    Saw it yesterday. Good movie.
Although, pretty much a setup for the next.
A little more back-story and fleshing out of tangent characters from last time.
You saw a bit more real emotional conflict rather than just one sided characters.

I like the clock idea. That would have been nice in DnD.
And I figured out the "hole" plan beforehand. (That's why I don't like mysteries...it's not as fun for me, although it was a good plan)

As for Jennifer Lawrence, I'm falling for her from her talk-show interviews. They're so genuine. She's a goof, like me. :)
I can't wait to see her in American Hustle. She takes on some VERY diverse roles.

Finally saw Catching Fire tonight. As I said elsewhere, "That was...hmm."

Overall, it was good. I STILL feel like it was rushed, which seems odd with a two and a half hour movie.

I'm still kinda mulling over it. And yeah, I got teary a few times.
