I never did finish that one. It lost me in the last third of the book.

Freetofly Diving deep into the abyss

The Rape of Art, by Anthony Kocur.
Not published yet, but I have the honor to read it. So far pretty wild and imaginative.

I am in the beginning of the story, but maybe I will lose interest in the last third?

Hard to say. It turns into this exercise in free love. Normally, I like free love, but after the first two thirds of the book it seemed weird.

I'm now reading The Hunger Games, partly because it's the thing to do—a bestseller...a movie...and all that.

Look at me being all "hip" and "with it."

Currently reading The Best and the Brightest. Excellent book about the political decisions that were made regarding Vietnam.

  10. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land was published in 1961, predating even the "free love" late '60s. I first read it back in those late '60s and was totally mesmerized by it. Times change, along with perspectives. Grok? Maybe I should re-read it (again) to see if my feelings for it have changed.

Right now, in preparation for the new baseball season, I'm reading Ernie Harwell's Tuned To Baseball. I spent nearly 40 years listening to him broadcasting Tigers' games. In my mind, I'm hearing his voice narrating the book. Loving it!

I am reading The Hunger Games. Trying my hardest to get it done before seeing the movie with the kids. My daughter read the book in 3 days.

Just picked up Selected by Mark Van Vugt & Anjana Ahuja. It's a evolutionary psychology based theory of leadership. I need to read some fiction at some point.

I'm now working on finishing the second half of The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, a collection of the earliest stories by Robert E. Howard.

I have the third collection, The Conquering Sword of Conan. I think I will pick up the second, The Bloody Crown of Conan, as well. (They're available as remainders for under $10 at my favourite used bookstore.) Once I read those, I will read Howard's crowning achievement: the only novel he published in his short lifetime, Conan the Conqueror.

I'm reading these because my understanding of Conan comes mainly from the comics (i.e., different authors) and the Schwarzenegger films (the latter of which I have mixed feelings). I'm also doing this partly to rid myself of the bad aftertaste left from watching the mess that was Conan the Barbarian (2011). They really dropped the ball with that film. They should have created it with purists in mind. The timing was ripe for that kind of film, but no: it was insulting to Howard's mythos. Sure, the visuals were all right, but audiences demand more these days.

    Just the first one.

I'm a little over halfway through the Magician King, which is a sequel to the Magicians. It's sort of Narnia meets Harry Potter, for an older crowd.

How are you liking it? I've had Amazon recommend The Magicians to me several times now, and haven't bought it yet. Is it worth it?

I liked the first one better, but the sequel certainly isn't bad. I do find myself getting annoyed with the main character quite a bit, however.
