Oh man, that is really good stuff.

With all the blackouts we get here, I've had many longer posts screwed over.

    Thanks, cynthetiq!

It did go faster than I expected, which is good. It gave me time to prepare for my afternoon fun, which I was totally not prepared for. I mean it was much more fun than I expected. I'm going to add another mod in a few minutes because I want to share just how fun it was!!! And I want all y'all to also participate in the FUN!

That was another mod that I had in mind, self joining groups. It's not exactly what you are thinking, but since you watch a thread, you're alerted to new posts. What I wanted to do was give people the ability to add themselves to their own forums of interests. There would be a core set of forums and then there are some that are available for anyone to join and there are some that you can request to join and a moderator adds approves you. That's something I want to have for sure. I'm going to work on fixing that one. Right now I get the bulk of the requests because when you join you get a message from me telling you to that you need to request politics and weapons. While I don't mind doing it, it would be better service if the rest of the staff could assist if I'm not on or available.

Let me put together this new function, and then make a new thread for it.

Hah! I hope you're not giving that duty to the_jazz.

He still hasn't given me access to Tilted Exhibiton.

    What a douchebag. :D

Hi, Cyn ... look at this:

    TFP089.JPG

Everything, including a working 'ciew attachment' link was there. In this thread, couple of posts above, I was mainly thinking of the extended editing time and the saved drafts. But this blows my mind. The fact that it was ring 's amazing photo was already powerful, so the overall impact brought me to my knees.

I extrapolate and reckon that this technical modification makes a massive difference in how the forums will work. to me, it feels like the first time I heard music through a Sony Walkman or the first time I used a mobile phone. OK, news content coming at me via email is no new thing, but this feels different: this modification you've done is putting me a few steps closer to the people I care about. Thanks again :)

Zen, I wish I could take credit for it. Kier and his crew at Xenforo are the ones that really are responsible. It is all part of the upgrade.

Like you, I thought it was incredible the first time I got it. What happened for me was I immediately went to the xenforo website and it was part of their internal beta. I use this message system since vbulletin because it saves me one less moment of reading. It's nothing short of simple yet awesome.

    I'm glad you like it.

Yo. Just noticed I misread the Posting Games thing, and was thinking it wouldn't show up in the Recent Threads section anymore.

Since Recent Threads and alerts are how I primarily find out about new content, could a feature possibly be added where I can select which forum sections I want to see updates on in the Recent Threads section? Sections like Posting Games I don't really care too much about, but it keeps pushing out the more interesting threads, because only 5 are listed at any one time.

    Cheers.

Is it really so hard to check the what's new tab? There comes a point where annoyance at the posting games section becomes less about convenience and more about a prohibition.

Sometimes that forum is more active than the discussion forums. Reality check.

Thanks for the reality check.

I'm not annoyed at the Posting Games section. It's simply my preference not to be updated on that section, and I'd think people in general would appreciate being able to pick which areas of their own interest they see updates on. It also seems fitting to a forum with a member base that has a wide array of differences and interests, where some post almost exclusively in one section, others blog only, others post only in 2-3 sections, etc.

Where the hell you got your "prohibition" conclusion from is far beyond me, as it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I clearly didn't ask for a general removal of Posting Games updates, but for my individual ability to not receive them.

the site really isn't that large. do you seriously find it such a nuisance to navigate around the image threads? again, what's the problem with using the 'what's new' tab?

As I said before, it's simply my preference. Why on earth are you on my case anyway? I'm asking cynthetiq for the feature, not you.

If it's about you being a donor and me not being one while asking for special shit, I'll happily make a $200 donation today for the privilege to ask for special shit.

    classy.

personally, i think the idea of compartmentalizing the site even more is a bad idea. this is a community. if we keep making it easier and easier for each other to ignore certain aspects of what we are doing here as individuals, we will lose the personal, community-driven feel of this place. not to mention, set up opportunities for people to feel undervalued and marginalized. that has never been what tfp is about.

Yeah, because $200 is the epitome of wealth and gives me supersized bragging rights.

Why would people feel undervalued and marginalized as a result of the feature I asked for? If a person doesn't have any interest in a particular section (such as Plan9 's beloved Politics forum), then they don't post there anyway. When a majority of the forum feels the same way, which is currently the case with the Politics forum I believe, doesn't the "undervalued and marginalized" argument apply anyway? And while saying this, I don't think the Politics people particularly care, either.

Further, if ignoring a forum section undervalues and marginalizes people, why don't you protest the introduction of the Ignore function? If many people put a person on ignore, it undervalues and marginalizes (emphasis on marginalization) him/her as well.

My original intention was that the Recent Threads was to also not have Posting Games on it as well. I couldn't do it without spending a good amount of effort re-coding the mod. I did ask the mod author if he'd be interested in making it select-able forums, but he's not so interested at this time.

Posting games gets so much more traffic than the discussion threads. It's really not my intention for this space at all. It's the part I don't want to encourage, but I do accept that it can't be discussion all the time. But realistically, many of the posting games folk were participating in the rest of the forum. It is why I used the same successful tactic that forced people to participate before getting access to the Titty Board. After that, another tactic used was to remove TB from the What's New?

I'm not trying to marginalize anyone. I'm trying to keep this space a focused on being a discussion space.

If you look at the front page, you'll see that I stopped putting up new ones as of Feb. 24. Actually it's not that I stopped, it's that no one else posted any threads that I could put up on there. For a few days there were no single new threads. Not a single new thread. Each day was mostly Posting Games dominating the recent threads and the what's new. How is someone supposed to find interesting discussion if it's buried in posting games?

I go to reddit often. They used to have interesting discussions there. The front page used to be a good dose of discussions. Now it's most /r/pics and plays on memes. It doesn't take a lot of effort to engage in that, nor does it take a lot of effort to think on that and to contribute in that manner. Really, memegenerator.com and boom, you're in like flynn making repartee at the lowest level you can. Sure you can go to other sub-reddits to find the discussions, but really the space snowballs off the front page hits. Images tend to dominate these days, from simple /r/pics to /r/WTF. Hell if /r/GirlsGoneWild were part of the what's new mix, you'd see those light up the front page too.

I want this to be a discussion space. It's what used to be the unofficial tagline, "Come for the porn, stay for the discussion." Porn was a draw. It brought people to TFP. Now we don't have porn to be a crutch.

Sometimes in the past, the images brought people to TFP. The Ziegfield Follies by mixedmedia brought lots of traffic several times when hit by digg or reddit. Same for Jetee's Star Wars and Cosplay threads which brought just as many. Girls and Cars NSFW, got hit on stumbleupon.com, was early on, but we've not had large traffic since then. Those of you who like the posting games, post there. Bring in traffic and I'll find a different solution.

In my opinion what happens in posting games is just as legitimate as a large percentage of what you would consider to be discussion here. Much of what goes on here is more what I would consider to be chit-chat. Granted, expression through images is not what you want. That, I can understand. But to say that it takes less thought and less self-expression by default is narrow-minded, cyn, and I take a little bit of exception to the idea that you only value it as a possible traffic generator.

My only "issue" with posting games, if I have one, is that it's frustrating to see a cool sounding link and be unable to click it because it's behind the 2 post barrier.

I guess the good thing is that when that happens, I will almost immediately go out of my way to find some threads to post in so I can go check it out. It is a little annoying when all 5 (or whatever) recently updated posts are in the Posting Games section, but I think a toggle would be great (to see or not see Posting Games) so people who like it or are incentivized by it can see it and those who don't care can happily not care.

It may be the case for you mixedmedia. Many don't need to spend a considerable amount of time to find an image to post. Finding a pretty girl showing off her naughty bits in a particular angle or manner? Not as long as constructing a thoughtful response to an OP in the Life or Sexuality threads, or even Politics. Heck, filling up a board full of Pinterest images

Yes, there is an amount of chit chat. I'd like to remove as much of that as possible. It is one of the reasons why Like works because it removes some of the chit chat aspect. I've been working on a mod to help make that more robust because it's not all just like, and not dislike either.

I don't just see it as a traffic generator. It is a valid for of release AFTER contributing to the discussion. Again, I'm comparing it in the same manner to the Titty Board.

Yes, that is my goal, but to do it in a manner that makes sense to the core of the board, not necessarily what the vocal majority is trying to dictate.
