What's new with this upgrade?

Okay, I finally got this upgrade mostly done. I say mostly done because I didn't get all the features working that I wanted to, that an old function breaking a new function, I know what it is, but I have to think of the trade offs versus the benefits, not to mention maybe the old function will be upgraded. So that means more testing in my future, and another upgrade in TFP's future.

This is a good thing because it keeps it interesting. Okay not facebook interesting, I mean WTF is with Timeline? Here at least we're a community where we all get to talk about this stuff and sometimes it's done as needed, and sometimes things are changed because that's the way the community operates.

Here's some of the new things you'll notice.

Posting Games no longer appears in What's New?
First, this is a discussion space. I am not trying to alienate people but I want people to come for the discussion and stay for the community. Posting games will no longer show up in What's New? The posting requirements of 2 posts per day stays as is. One day maybe there will be some inflation to that, but there is a couple of points in time during the day that Posting Games dominates the What's New? burying all the discussions.

Edit Post time limit has been removed!
This is something Plan9 has been waiting for. Donors can edit their posts as much as they want. If you are a registered user, you'll only be able to edit your post for 60 minutes.

    Auto Save Drafts
If you're browser crashes, or you leave the page by accident, you will be able to recover it just by opening the screen again. I haven't tested this extensively because I use Lazarus Form Recovery, so I'd appreciate any feed back about this.

    Conversations and Subscribed thread emails
When you get them in your inbox, you'll see the entire message.

    Ignore
While I don't think this is required for our community, harmony is better than anything else. There is now an ignore function.

    Auto Media Embedding
Something I loved from before. Just put in the URL if we have the embed codes for it, it will embed automagically.

Thanks for your patience in giving me time today to get this done.

Of course, it goes without saying, thank you all for your support. The community would not be here without you guys.

    Some good upgrades. Thanks.

My spelling OCD thanks you, but my paranoid side now wonders who's ignoring me...

I also like the little pop notice at the bottom left of the screen when you get a new alert.

Sheesh I'm paranoid that something is broken that I cannot see or haven't tried the Konami code to break it.

  5. Thanks, cyn! That didn't take long at all.

Um, Fremen, what do guitar parts have to do with it?

Sometimes the seemingly simple things can have a profound effect on our experience. These are good changes.

I have nothing against the Posting Games, but it's a great idea to leave them out of What's New, especially considering several threads there seem "always new" and so keep crowding out the other stuff.

Sorry, dude. It was by far the most requested new feature. We aim to please, and all that.

Well, that's just it. More recently, with the increasing number of erotic image themes, the What's New has become kind of: "What new erotic images have been posted and hey is that a discussion thread in there?" I mean, there's, like, what, at least a dozen erotic-themed threads that get at least three to six or so posts a day. (It's not like I never peek at them—OMG that ass thread!)

For me, it's not the content itself so much as how it the volume skews things. I would have the same opinion if Tilted Politics or Tilted Weaponry had an unusually high participation rate/thread volume, making TFP look like a political debate forum or a weaponry forum. But since those would be actual discussions, I'd at least would like to see separate What's New features for those specific subforums.

(I would have liked to have read some of those complaints.)

i agree. what's more, i don't think the 'what's new' updates are needed because participation down there is pretty exclusive and we all get alerts when updates are posted.

i do sort of wish that more people posted down there. i don't think they are attributed with the value they deserve or have reached the potential that they could have. but then, it is my fetish. so i am biased.

First things first, thanks for the work Cyn, I saw you even got it done a little faster than you had hoped.

I, for one, am very glad for this - and this may have been brought up before, but perhaps there is a way to allows users to customize this, (a check-box or something) so it's there if you want it but not if you don't. Like you said, we don't want to be alienating people and this way we could give everyone what they want.

Wait... did he mention me because I was a whiny asshole last August or simply because I'm famous for editing posts a dozen times?

Mental note: begin putting a minimum 1-hour moratorium on responding to 9er's new posts.

    EDIT: Damn, too soon....
