Wikipedia has a pretty good definition of satire:

Among the most popular satirists in the U.S. include John Stewart and Stephen Colbert. From the above definition, and besides the obvious sarcasm/irony, you will note that Stewart uses exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, and double entendre, among other things, while Stephen Colbert is quite a burlesque using much of the same but in full parody mode.

Another great example in the U.S. is The Onion.

There are other great examples out there. In light of the Catholic/birth control debate currently raging, I give you one of my favourites:

What do you think of satire?
    Who are your favourite satirists?
What are some of your favourite works?

I love it if it's well done.

My best friend used to be an enormous Monty Python freak: I like them, but don't worship them. I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" often contain elements of satire, which I think both do well, more often than not. And Seth Green's "Robot Chicken" is awesome cultural satire. I love it.

I really love "This Is Spinal Tap." Brilliant piece of rock satire. Ungodly funny: I still can't watch the Stonehenge sequence without almost crying from laughing. A lot of the stuff in McSweeney's qualifies as satire, and I like almost all of it.

And back when Woody Allen was funny, a lot of his stuff was satirical, and it was brilliant.

I dunno - I have never really enjoyed anything Woody Allen did - I don't know if I'm just not getting the references - it just has never seemed funny to me. I'm always left wondering what everyone is raving about *shrugs*

There are two guys - Clarke and Dawe (http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/clarkedawe.htm) that do a weekly bit on one of the current affairs shows in Australia. They never use makeup or anything, but it is always clear who they are making a mockery of. I find this very clever, but if you didn't follow Australian politics/news it would mostly be lost on you.

Prior to the 2000 Olympics these two guys wrote (and starred in) a TV show called "The Games" - it was brilliant.

  4. I like really good satire, usually in small doses. Most of today's satire becomes tiring. Like Colbert. I prefer him in sound bites.

Back when SNL was funny, it was mostly satire (Generallismo Francisco Franco is STILL dead!). When I was a kid, I lived for MAD magazine, which was all satire. If it's well done, I like it.

Of course! I grew up on a steady diet of MAD magazine. I think that's how I developed my sense of satire, and probably my overall sense of humour.
