Speaking of that show, I remember how disappointed I was when I heard the star was making a movie called Die Hard and was going to be barechested throughout most of the film... and they meant Bruce Willis.

Back on topic, I once dated a Mexican girl- she (metaphorically speaking) tore my heart from my chest, bit into it, sucked out the juice, spit it back into my face, threw down the remains and stomped on it, and finally proceeded to do a flamenco dance around it...

...it was the last time I ever asked her to go Dutch.

Do whatever it is you would do if she and her family were white.

Pretend that they're people too, just like you and that they shouldn't be treated differently because of their ethnicity.

    Ya know?

I liked Moonlighting, right up there with Scarecrow and Mrs. King for the list of good 80's shows. Of course I say that keeping in mind that some of the shows I enjoyed in my youth have not aged so well and just seem corny or downright stupid at times to me now. Especially looking at things like late seasons of Duke of Hazzards where they were using miniatures because they had killed so many Chargers doing 100 foot jumps they were getting hard to find.
wandering ontopic briefly (happens on occasion around here) - I would go with the classic "be yourself" advice. If you have not driven her away by doing so already, then her family should like you and they have no doubt heard about you and seen how you are treating her.

Get used to eating spicy food if you haven't already, or else when you go to their house and eat you will be mocked.

dont make any... i mean any, jokes. period.

this is opening a can of worms that can and will, deliberately and effectively, install your foot in your mouth...

Just be yourself.... unless your an asshole or a racist, in which case you should just go ahead and break it off anyway...

You're screwing their daughter or sister, they hate you regardless of race. Be polite and give them time.

The whole issue of behaving differently because she's Latina makes me uneasy...not to be disrespectful but your very question threw up a red flag for me. Part of it goes to the time when Mexican people were (at least here in the U.S.) classified as 'white'. Though that was a US Census choice, labels do influence our thinking no matter how subtly.
I wouldn't want to be a white dude dating a Mexican gal about to meet her male family members. You'll probably have no trouble with the females. But some men of a certain age in the Mexican-American culture are still very traditional or sexist in their way of thinking. I have no real advice for you other than treat them as you'd wish to be treated.

    Serious Advice?

Stay away from discussion of religion, politics and asking anything about popular Tex-Mex recipes or your favorite Mexican food. In relation to politics, don't bring up immigration status, immigration politics, the state of Arizona, etc. In my experience, Latinos hate all being lumped together as Mexicans, and Mexicans hate being assumed to be illegal aliens who are taking our jobs and not paying taxes. Best advice - stay away from it, and if it comes up try not to offend anyone.

Did you meet her family yet? If not, the advice here can be summed up to: Don't talk, nod your head and smile.

I always liked that quote. Try to fit it in to everyday conversation.

  15. Yeah, run that by her family. I'll bet they find it hilarious:rolleyes:

  16. This's been nibbling at my mind since I first read this thread: there's a good chance that "the girl" isn't a "Mexican." Born here or naturalized, that'd make her an American. Hispanic Americans are sensitive to such labels and themselves distinguish between Mexicans and everyone else.

That's a good point. Re-reading the OP I see he uses the term 'Mexican' when describing her. If she is indeed 'Mexican' then I assumed wrong by calling her Mexican-American. I'm kinda sensitive to these labels as well because I produced a child with an American of Mexican heritage.
Speaking for myself, at age 21 and having been raised where there was no such thing as a Mexican-American to get to know nor no impetus to learn of some standard cultural differences, I plunged head on into marriage to a Mexican American man. That specifically was one of the biggest errors of choice in my life. More particularly was my complete ignorance of for example, that some cultures/generations find it acceptable to beat people--wife, kids, into submission. I learned.

You mean you don't want to great them like a border patrol agent and ask for their long form birth certificate and other forms of identification. ;)

I have friends whose parents still have a home in Mexico, and I think some will laugh it off while others are rightly offended by it.

I really didn't think this would generate so much...chatter. I could stay silent on the issue and continue to enjoy the mass speculation and commentary that has ensued, however, there are some good points that have been brought up and I feel I should clarify a little bit. My lady friend was born in the U.S. but has lived the majority of her life in Mexico. Her parents are U.S. citizens and live on the U.S. side of the border. No, I've not met them yet. My Spanish is what you'd called Tex-Mex, or border Spanish. I can get by and most of the time I get laughs and some snorts from the men when I mess up and say something silly or backwards. I've grown up and lived most my life in South West Texas so I am accustomed to border culture and hanging out with Mexicans, U.S. citizens as well as illegals.

    @ Remixer, that's a funny video.

My hometown is 50% hispanic, many of them first or second generation from Mexico. (The other large groups are 25% Russians, many of them from the old believer background & then 25% white)
The majority of the Spanish you hear there is the more uneducated lower class type. My dad once used the word he had heard for "neck" from a previous patient with another patient and got a very amused reaction - it was the word used for "chicken neck", not for humans.
Of course the ironic thing is that I have tried plenty of authentic Mexican food made by true experts at it, and I genuinely do not like a good portion of it (or at least the side dishes). Refried beans are among the foulest things ever put on a plate in my opinion.
