Oh man, if a rogue I was DMing for tried to "kill everything" they would die so quickly. I once did that to a particularly arrogant Monk who thought he would charge in and try to solo a Spirit Naga.

Every good DM knows when to fudge rolls or have certain things materialize or otherwise change into something more insidious.

I did it on purpose. He was being arrogant and had done it several times before. He needed to learn a lesson.

Oh come on, have you never killed PCs as a DM? There needs to be SOME risk involved otherwise you breed the type of "can't die, going to be arrogant and charge through" shit that I saw during our play sessions. A lesson needed to be taught, it was taught.

    You have no idea.

I had a cleric stand up to a frontal assault from a storm elemental. It practically eviscerated him, taking out something like 2/3 of his hit points. He had the opportunity to maneuver himself behind the party, which also consisted of a very sturdy fighter and a ranger.

Did he? No. He just stood there. The movement on this thing prevented the party from doing much tactically in one turn, and so the next turn, I had the thing simply repeat the same attack. Down goes the cleric—hard—the party's...only...healer.

The cleric wasn't just the only healer; he was also the character with the highest wisdom.

The player needed to realize this. He's supposed to protect the party, not play hero. That's what the fighter is for. I just had to learn him.

killing everything does not necessarily mean being the frontline fighter all the time

Well I just sprang for D&D Insider. Pretty amazed with the character editor, it makes everything so easy. Also, having access to the compendium and all the Dungeon and Dragon magazines is a big plus. Luckily, I got my party to chip in so it only cost me like 10 bucks for the whole year. Score!

    Been playing for 33 years...

I play with a group on average once a month...it's a challenge to get 5 adults with family together. (EVERYTHING else is a priority)
Currently we are doing a 4.0 DnD campaign...in Ravenloft.

Actually tomorrow, we've got a huge battle coming...so we are pulling an all-day thing.
Steaks, beer, snacks & soda...big TV to project the maps on to, nice chairs to sit for a long time.

It's going to be a challenging one, 12th level, group of 9, each player does 2 different chars, and one NPC.
We do this to keep it interesting, plus a house-rule that any char can change your powers after a days rest. (like a 3.5 mage)
It allows us to experiment, and be situational...and it keeps 4.0 from being static.

I even ran a thread-based campaign in the old TFP (2.0?), "The Tomb of Velix"
The map/setup was Ravenloft's Strad's Castle...but it was more an emphasis on role-playing than any rules at all...like improv.
(Still have a copy of it...should make a book out of it...)

Can't wait for the new version,
I'm hoping with so much participation in the beta by so many players, it should be much better balanced.

I don't play Dungeons and Dragons. I do play a different sort of tabletop game: Warmachine.

I'm not sure if an RPG would really be my style. I'd probably give it a shot if the opportunity presented itself, but it never has. I enjoy the tactical style of mini gaming, though Warmachine is the only one of those I've played. The downside is the high price tag -- those models don't come cheap!

Ok: First impressions of D&D Insider, it's bloody awesome. So many character options, every build they offer... Also, with the adventuring tools they have access to every monster, and you can level them down/up to fit your encounter and party level. Like, I wanted the party to interact with some drow, but they're not a high enough level, so I can just level down the monster and it scales down all the stats for you. Super handy!

I dont really play much in the way of tabletop RPGs anymore, mainly due to working shifts it makes it hard to get in a game on any weeknights.
I do still LARP a few times a month though.
I've seriously considered starting up a once a month Sunday afternoon drop in game though, because my tabletop desire is growing again.

Used to play both D&D and large battle on table top. Loved it but it was a guilty pleasure. Not wishing to hijack but did anyone used to enjoy the Eyof the Beholder series played 1 and 2 but three bored the pants of me !

Ok, ran into my first rage-inducing moment with DnD Insider - Their online character creation tool only lets you store 20 (!) characters online. Any more than that and you have to export them offline and store them somewhere, and delete something in your online account to make room for it. Then, if you want to import your character again, same process, export, delete, import. Pretty frustrating for DMs who have tons of characters to shuffle.

so, i know it's not table top, but i just bought this on sale today... it's baldur's gate 1 and 2, icewind dale 1 and 2, planescape torment, and temple of elemental evil. basically all the best rpg's from then which are arguably even today the best written ever. only 7 bucks... and it will probably run on just about any pc at max settings since they aren't so new. just a headsup.

For those collecting miniatures, I found an item of interest: The Gelatinous Cube.
(Now, for those who've searched, the official item is ridiculously priced ($79? GTFO!) but I found a much cheaper alternative on Ebay:

I just received my own cube today and am quite satisfied with it. Heavy sucker, but it's sturdy and again, a fraction of the price. I know some purists want a clear cube with a hollow center, but I am not so inflexible about that.
