OK This thread, is for questions.
Stuff that you ought to know but don't and don't lend themselves to easy research like google

    I'll start
when you but a shirt, in the collar, there are a pair of little flat bullet shaped peices of plastic in the collar. Thy are there apparently to keep the collar from curling

    what are they called?

The little yellow (or in some cases, white) rubber "tabby" things they tar to the middle of freshly-paved roads until they can paint lines on the road. I never knew what they were officially called when I was little so I just called them road markers. I used to be obsessed with them when I was little, even stealing them and nailing them into the long dirt road leading to my grandmother's house when I was six and wanted to be a road construction worker.

I have a contact at an asphalt and paving company, but I've never seen those tabby things in Connecticut. At least, I don't think I have. Do you have a photo of them?

The rubber markers are just called 'marking tabs'.

The domed reflectors are called 'deliniator buttons'.

Sorry, Redlemon. I couldn't even find photos online of them. That's part of what makes it so difficult. Anyhow, RogueGypsy, simple Google and Google Image searches don't reveal anything for marking tabs, but they do reveal partial results for pavement marking tabs. AKA, I am ordering a case of 500 in yellow.

We had a claim years ago where a marking tab was thrown into the median by a snowplow, then picked up and thrown by a lawnmower through a rolled down car window moving at 60+ MPH. Hit a woman in the temple and she died immediately. Think about the physics and chances involved.

You can buy collar stays at Brooks Brothers for $15. You should take them out before you send a shirt to the dry cleaners.

  9. I have a whole bunch of collar stays. If anyone needs any, come on over. Beer's cold, too!

Years ago when I used to wear shirts with collars to work, I actually made my own collar stays since I seemed to always lose them. I was also wearing neckties then so the stays were more necessary for some shirts. I remember cutting them out of thin plastic notebook divider sheets I had laying around. I hardly wear dress shirts now except a couple times a year so now I have way too many collar stays.

    My question:
Why/how did the following happen? I've searched for an answer but never found anything satisfactory. So I'm hoping someone here can explain how my rods and cones or whatever eye/brain interface reacted in this situation.

Years ago I was wearing aviator glasses with yellow lenses while a passenger in my friend's car. Neither of us were on any hallucinogens or drugs at the time. After a while I took off the glasses and looking around, I suddenly realized that the lines along the side and center of the road were pink. So I asked my buddy what the hell this was all about and why anybody would paint lines pink. Gradually the lines became yellow and I realized that the yellow lens glasses must have altered my color perception and changed yellow to pink.

BadNick: see especially from Craven's link the American flag illusion. It is about eye fatigue.

my immediate thought was: why were a snowplow and lawnmower out at the same time? That earthly end would fit on the Spike TV show 1000 ways to die.

There was at least 3 months between the snowplow and the mower. Which makes the whole thing even crazier.

3/4 of the way down the page on the right. You'll have better luck finding them searching under 'traffic control supplies'.

Optical illusions of this sort are a consequence of mammalian encephalisation of sensory processing. The human brain is very plastic, and capable of rewiring itself. When you look at something through a set of tinted glasses, the brain very shortly begins to see that as the "normal" colour for that object. Remove the tinting, and the brain, which has rewired itself to correct for the tinting, now perceives the complementary colour needed to produce the "normal" colour through the tinting.

A very weird example is the wearing of erecting prism glasses, which switch up and down. After about 20-30 minutes, without realising it at first, the wearer corrects this and switches up and down so things look to be normal. Remove the glasses, and for 20-30 minutes, things will look upside down.

Lower forms of animal do not have this ability... the processing of the sensory information is performed largely in the sensory organ itself.

I totally want a pair of these prism glasses. I remember hearing about them in elementary school.

Wow. That's absolutely insane. With regard to a claim, are you part of a law firm? /curiosity
