Looks nice, but I am unsure about paying $2.99 to manage my podcasts when Google Listen is ok ay. It's not great, but it is free.

It's a niche app, but Heavens-Above is a program that displays and alerts you to visible satellite passes, ISS passes, and Iridium Flares. It even has a widget that shows the start time, end time, azimuth, and elevation of the next visible event.

The first time you see a magnitude -8, your mind will be blown. It's also pretty cool when you're outside in the summer to be able to get everyone's attention for a few seconds, point to a spot in the sky, and watch them react in amazement of seeing their first flare.

i just got an android tablet and have a quick question. i understand that this os tends to shut off programs that arent currently active. is there a way to manually keep them going? im loving it, but my main gripe is having a podcast going and switching to a youtube and the audio quits. i would like to keep the podcast going and play a quick toutube and browse a different site with both the audios going.

Sadly my experience is that Android Market filters out many applications when connection from a tablet. The reason is that the Android Market filters out applications and widgets that it thinks will not work on the device that connects to the market. I haven't figured out yet where the mistakes lies if it's the tablet reporting it's capabilities incorrectly or if the programmers are requesting unnecessary capabilities.
Some tablets come configured to use a manufactures source of apps instead of the Android Market, I have been able to add the Android Market on the one my SO has.

Amazon market is a good alternative. If you browse for apps via the market website, you can view unfiltered listings apparently.

I've got Cyanogenmod 9 (Ice Cream Sandwich) running on my HP Touchpad and even with that device's oddball-for-android 4:3 aspect ratio I can still use most apps just fine. A couple apps will insist on a particular orientation on a tablet, but the "stretch" method that android uses to handle the extra screenspace is a LOT better than WebOS' simulated phone screen.

Lots of good choices listed here, but there are a couple that I use and find essential that haven't been mentioned, and a couple of fun ones not mentioned.

Essentials: Juice Defender, even more than the app killers. It really extends your battery life by shutting down things you're not using (like Wi-Fi if there's no signal). Also, Lookout, for anti-virus, for backup, and for disabling your phone remotely if lost; and AVG antivirus for just plain protection (I run it with Lookout, call me anal, but so far it works). I use Folder Organizer to keep all this stuff organized.

Useful stuff, if you drive, Gas Buddy and TripLog for finding gas cheap and keeping track of expenses; Cam Scanner for using your camera as a scanner to pdf and Word files; DropBox for sharing files with friends, family, co-workers (cross-platform with your PC, laptop, tablet, etc), Pageonce for keeping track of credit card and checking accounts on the fly; ConvertPad for converting measurements from one system to another (anyone know how many Smoots in a meter?)--essential if you're an engineer, fun for the rest of us; SBMX is a fabulous drawing program--steep learning curve, butWOW! I use Bloomberg and the old gray lady NY Times all the time for basic reliable news, Pulse for the rest. List Master (and Pro) is excellent for all those lists, whether packing lists, grocery lists, to-do lists, whatever.

Google Maps has already been mentioned, but is an essential whether you are a commuter looking for traffic or directions to an unfamiliar destination, or a wilderness tripper caught in an unfamiliar bay; Google Sky is also excellent, and Earth is amazing. I use Gmail across all my platforms, and their Calendar.

Most of these are free, although in some cases (especially Lookout) I have paid varying amounts to upgrade, either for better features or to support the development of better software. I will rarely buy an app unseen. I want to try it first, see if it works, see if it fits my needs or interests.

I think the same goes for Android (or any OS for that matter) that running multiple anti-virus application does NOT add protection in fact it can be worse than running single anti-virus application.
