I know we have some TFPers who use the interweb for serious research. Some of you might have access to subscription services; I don't.

    I'm looking for recommendations for
    some internet search engines
    that actually look for information,
    not for merchandise & services
some software thinks I might purchase.

Google has devolved into a merchandising tool.

I don't know if dogpile is still around, or was ever worth using.

Duckduckgo is OK, but not quite the info source I would like.

    Thanks in advance!

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I use DuckDuck Go because it offers better privacy but it is fair to middling in terms of the quality of the output.

I hadn't heard about the privacy at duckduckgo. The librarian at the school where my wife recommended it. Yeah, middling results, but at least I don't get buried in Google Buy This! crap.

    I've used Opera for years.
It's faster and cleaner. Especially media.
Plus since most don't code for it, the popups and hacks don't work well on it.
    Much more secure.

And it's not a resource hog.
I can easily have 40+ tabs open with no issue.

Some we features don't work on it, but that's rare...then I simply switch to Firefox or Chrome
    but 99% works on it.

    I highly recommend it.
Especially for that unknown site browsing, so the bad guys can't get ya as well.

I have Opera as an option on my laptop, not sure why, think it came with something I installed. Honestly I rarely used it, & I don't do much on the LT these days. I'll give it try on my tablet.
