The $300k fine was for ethics violations, I believe, some of which were tax related. It was imposed by the House of Representatives, not the IRS.

This is the problem with the "anyone but Obama" mentality. There are no standards; only a hope of winning votes. Perhaps this is why the "hot topics" of the debates are abortion and taking down health care legislation. This is interesting because as an outsider, I don't view these topics as very important considering the other issues.

Yeah, so "anyone but Obama" becomes a popularity contest, and that mentality is a dangerous one. Logically speaking, anyone but Obama includes Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez. Even if you make assumptions with it (i.e., those two cannot be president because they aren't Americans), then substitute with Jeff Schoep or Sam Webb.

Is that the path you want to take towards governance?

What the Republican party needs is radical leadership, clearly.

    Thanks for posting that clip.

I believe he has no experience or ability to relate to the average person. It is why he comes off so stiff and fake....he's parroting what he has no knowledge of.

This should be Gingrich's theme music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-NlR54PqLw

How great would that be if 200 or so Occupy protestors showed up at one of his events and started playing this as the introduction song before he came on the stage.

Doesnt that kind of make someone unelectable though?

If you look at his wikipedia page dedicated him, and just spend 2 mins looking at all the businesses he is involved with, and charities, and businesses connected to the charities...

I mean, if Italy could elect Belusconi (sic) maybe after all it doesnt matter, but surely the biggest issue the US faces is the economic crisis - not whether homosexuals can get married or whatever, and he doesnt seem to be exactly sound on that issue.

the "debates" are a news corporation-sponsored exercise in conservative brand triage. they're a fucking joke. i suspect the idea is that if you give this band of idiots, racists and sociopaths enough air time, people will confuse them with something legitimate and that repetition will somehow enable people to put aside the lunacy of what they are saying. problem is, really, that no-one is watching.

i do understand that the debates are a joke. apparently enough people are watching though to boost the ratings.

actually, i'm a little curious about that. my sense is that the viewership is collapsing at least nationally---this going by the disappearance of the range of twitter people who had been watching and ridiculing to now. the last two have seen a collapse of that. but this is anecdotal. i wonder if ratings are publically available....will try to look around for data not originating with either of the nonsense parties.

Well, I am enjoying the live blog commentary at the Guardian.

I read somewhere that Fox News garnered over 5.5 million viewers for the South Carolina GOP debate.

i beginning to think people are just watching it for the reality tv factor. every week we see the rise and fall of a new candidate as if we are voting for american idol. as fake as the debates seems, its the only time you really get to see the candidates somewhat unfiltered.

Man, though I do wish I could toss them all a question....something like, "When will Republicans ever be as fiscally responsible as liberals such as Bill Clinton, Jean Chrétien, and Paul Martin?"

Na, we're fine with blowjobs in the Oval Office, as long as the economy is doing good.

I'm just appreciating how Gingrich is attempting to find political capital in starting a discussion about how low tax rates are for the 1% are.

Well, Gingrich is all like, "Romney is out of touch with most Americans, which is why he's hiding his tax numbers, blah, blah, blah, he has something to hide." Now? Now he can go on to say that ultra-rich Romney is definitely out of touch with most Americans because he makes millions every year and pays a lower tax rate than most taxpayers.

Gingrich can basically say that Romney has no real impetus to lower taxes for Americans because he's already paying such low rates, that Romney is sitting pretty and won't understand the importance, blah, blah, blah.

i read some reports this morning that argued the viewership for ritualized conservative brand triage in the form of "debates" is collapsing, but they were at a remove from the data i was hoping to look at. then it occurred to me that this infotainment is proprietary and that no-one likely has much of an interest in not controlling how it is interpreted/made public. ah well. why this idiocy gets national coverage is beyond me--local coverage in the states involved i understand. but national? why is this news at that level?
