    Great comparison
I’m looking forward to the new one.

I fell in love with the original movie
Then again, I was more into symbolism and mysticism than most people.
I don’t think the original succeeded in theaters because the general public back then didn’t want to think about all the connections.

These days, I think the general audience is more in tune to this kind of abstract and subtle movie.
Being more familiar with fantasy, magic, superheroes, sci-fi on a greater scale.

And they can dive into it more
With the web, videos, taking things apart, pausing, slo-mo and various discussion groups
They have a lot more “at hand” and a willingness to dive in.
Much more sophisticated than when the original was released.

I think this will be much more successful

Then again, David Lynch has always been an acquired taste

    Ooh! There's already a thread!
What did y'all think of the new Dune?

How am I just now seeing this? We DID watch Dune @DamnitAll...

To the General question - I really enjoyed this newer movie - especially when I realized that it was only the first of a planned two part movie set, and that the second movie has now been greenlit. One of my chief problems with Lynch's 1984 version is that all of the Fremen uprising under Paul Muadib is kind of glossed over in about 5 minutes and I was afraid the same thing was going to happen here as I watched the clock get closer to the end of the movie with no way to have that resolution.

I haven't read the original book in a while, so I can see that I need to add it to my list of books to read soon. I think part 2 is projected to be released in 2023?

Saw the new movie last night and it might be my new favorite movie, period. I loved it. I recently re-listened to the audiobook and watched the 1984 movie (had never seen that one). I love this new movie so much!

I saw the new one finally...and it didn't disappoint.

However, I'll say that I liked it AND the David Lynch version.
    Both better than the book.

The new one was subtler and spiritual...Lynch's, colorful and symbolic. (and done in one movie)
The new went for more swordplay and subtitles...Lynch's for mental whispers.

I will say the older movie struck me when I was in an existential mood...so the phrases stuck with me...and stuck over the years. "The sleeper must awaken"
But I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel for the update.

I want to see it again in the theater.
I might try to catch it next week.
It's absolutely stunning and has stuck with me. Re-reading the book again has given me more context that I want to take into the theater.

Managed to watch Part 2 recently, and I really enjoyed Denis Villeneuve's take on it. There were lots of elements retained from the book, yet a good number of changes that made it seem fresh.

As much as I enjoyed the book, some things that work in prose do not translate well to a visual medium; this new version sidesteps those problems.

Rumor has it that the success of Part 2 at the box office has given the green light for the second book (Dune Messiah) to be made to finish off a trilogy.

Although the story continues in Children of Dune (the 3rd book) I can see how they can pretty much close things up by just ending it after book two.

I have to get back to the idea of enjoying the Dune franchise. I haven't watched any of the adaptations.

I did try to read the novel once, but I rage-quit it two-thirds of the way through.

I don't think I was in the right state of mind for it. I got hung up on the atrocious dialogue from the characters teetering towards melodrama. But I now realize I should look past these or at least look at them as features, not bugs. I want to read the novel more for its concepts and themes.

For a while now, I've been reading books while listening to their audiobook versions, which has helped a lot with engagement and immersion. I think the audiobook of Dune will help me with the dialogue. It has a full cast and won an Audie.

I'll reread it soon because I want to see the new film productions afterwards. I've heard good things.

Just had a conversation with a friend, who I know likes sci fi.

They said they were going to an eye exam. I said they needed to keep those eyes, at least until they develop their other eyes.

    They looked at me funny.

I said, "did you read Dune?"

They nodded, smiled, and needed no more explanation.

Life is too short for bad books.

I find it strange how my moods influence my desire to read.

The series was mentioned in a random work meeting this week. Overheard from the other room. I chuckled.
Wish I could remember the reference now.

Wanna know something funny, though irrelevant to the specific topic at hand?

At the first TFP meetup I ever attended—Chicago in 2012, I think—there was a screening of The Big Lebowski (it happened to be my first time seeing it), and I barely remember any of that as well.

I’m sensing a pattern here. Maybe I shouldn’t watch new-to-me movies around other TFPers?
