Are you really gonna eat that?

    While there's a lot of subjectivity when it comes to food, certain food truths we hold self-evident across communities large and small, whether they stem from cultural norms, regional trends, or otherwise.

    The vast majority of people I know, for example, agree that you don't put salt in your coffee.

    I am generally a live and let live sort of person, especially when it comes to choices made that have absolutely no bearing on my daily existence—like someone else's food preferences. But there are some such preferences—choices, hankerings, what have you—that leave me wrinkling my brow in puzzlement and, sometimes, hidden disgust.

    My girlfriend, for example, is all about pineapple and onion on her pizza. There aren't many pizza topping combinations I personally want to eat less.

    What about you all? What are some things you've seen other folks consume by choice that leave you utterly bewildered? On the flip side, do you find yourself craving certain food preparations/combinations/etc. that leave those around you puzzled by your choices? What, if anything, might we all have in common in terms of what we agree we just won't eat?

    I lived with a woman that constantly used Tofu in dishes that required flavor and did not understand the use of spices.....I had to eat it to avoid being insulting but that stuff was nasty.

    One of my favorite pizza combos is:

    Ham, pineapple, red onion (sweet is best but red onions can be hit and miss), and black olives.



    Tofu definitely needs something to give it flavor, and should be cut into small pieces.

    American cheese--Why? It's flavorless. If your going consume something that is pretty much bad for you, it should at least taste good.

    I absolutely despise green veggies. Don't know why but I can't stand them. Peas, string beans, etc. are persona non grata in my mouth. Now, I'll eat green peppers and sometimes salad (especially if it has steak or chicken or shrimp on it) but other greens HELL NO!

    UGH, Pineapple ?? *****PIZZA IS DOUGH, SAUCE (used sparingly) and CHEESE....MAYBE some SAUSAGE... AND it needs to be thin crust and well crispy (let the FLAMES begin)

    I felt the same way, but. GOOD FRESH SUSHI is actually very good...
    Next is MUSSELS, I thought ....ugh...hw could anyone eat that....
    Then on a trip to France, we were in the Normandy area and MrsDaka had a plate of steamed mussels, I tried one.....we came back to that restaurant the next night....excellent ....also when fresh and properly prepared.
    If there is a BONEFISH GRILLE nearby, they make great mussels...BUT ask about the size, sometimes they are very small good, but not great...the bigger ones are better...

    I don't go out of my way to eat it, but find it OK when I have it. A little Wasabi or ginger helps.

    I find there are is a lot of foods that if cooked badly can be absolutely disgusting but if cooked well can be amazing.
    Brussel sprouts, tripe, escargots, to name just a few.
    Now I will eat just about anything if it cooked well, a good chef can make the worst food in the world taste good.
    Except for tree nuts, I'm allergic and they will kill me.

  11. For me this past year has been a bit of self discovery, I used to hate mayonnaise but now I only use it sparingly in the place of butter for certain things (like grilled cheese). I also used to hate deviled eggs, as growing up my parents ruined deviled eggs by overcooking them to the point the house reeked of sulfur. I agree with redravin, a good chef can improve bad dishes... except sour cream! Such a nasty tasting and foul smelling substance!

    But to add some disgust to this thread after seeing the previous posts about pineapple. I firmly believe pineapple and anchovy are a winning combination for pizza. Truly a delicious combination for salty, sweet, and savory!

    Here we go again........ PIZZA THIN WELL DONE DOUGH, PIZZA SAUCE AND CHEESE...(Maybe some sausage crumbled on top) NOTHING ELSE
    SOUR CREAM goes in a BAKED POTATO along with SHREDDED CHEDDAR, BUTTER AND BACON BITS..

    I cannot understand why anyone would eat raw oysters. The texture is just... :eek:yucky. Nothing against cooked oysters at all. Fried, oyster soup, with red sauce and pasta, all OK.
    And I loath applesauce.
    I absolutely love fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. Could drink it by the quart. Also fresh, unpasteurized unfiltered apple cider. But I can't do that and maintain any control over carbs.
    I'm with @DAKA on pizza minimalista. But I might scatter a few anchovies along with the sausage.:)

    I like pineapples and bell peppers on pizza. I rarely get it these days and just go with cheese because the kids will eat it.

    I eat a lot of veggies that people don't know about or wouldn't touch.

    The classic drunken 1 AM binge in college was pineapple and ham pizza from Domino's.
    I don't know how I survived those years.

    Grapefruit interferes with metaboloizing some statin drugs, such as Lipitor (simvastatin.)
    Doesn't effect others, like Pravastatin.
    But I don't take any statin drugs. Right now I don't take any prescription meds.:)

    It speeds digestion. Somewhat helpful with dieting, but will cause some meds to digest and release too quickly.

    I like making my own veggie patties
    Today I made a batch with kidney bean, burglar wheat, flaxseed, nutritional yeast, onion, and potato.
    Just threw things together in the blender and thickened it up with the yeast and potato flakes. Formed it into patties and fried them up. Ate them on a whole grain bun with mayo, cheddar, special sauce, and spinach.

    I don't know many people who would be willing to give that sort of a meal a shot. But I like it. This is why I haven't opened a restaurant. No one would want to eat my wacky food.
