When I was growing up, my parents let me have just about anything I wanted ... if I worked for it. When I was 11 or 12 and really wanted a stereo, my dad actually showed me how to get it. We sat at the kitchen table and he explained to me what kinds of jobs kids can do (babysitting, newspaper delivery, etc). Showed me how to find the jobs (newspaper ads, kids-for-hire, etc). When I got a newspaper route, he taught me how to bundle/deliver newspapers and read the route. When it was time to buy the stereo, showed me how to find a used one that worked great. On larger purchases that took a newspaper girl months to save for, they met me half way on the price a couple of times. So I don't get these kids in the OP's picture. They sound like spoiled brats. Sure, I wished for this or that at Christmas. But I didn't bad mouth my folks, to anyone, because of what was or wasn't given to me. It's a bit scary to think any of them are driving, if they really are that immature.

Same here - I was taught to earn my own money (in my case by working for various family friends with their own companies) and how to chose and buy the best items - including second hand stereo gear.

I hope that my daughter is getting a similar understanding from me, but I fear that my ex-wife is not helping. When she wanted an iPod touch, I suggested she save, but the ex bought her one. When she wanted an iPad, and had saved much of the money, the ex bought it for her.

Odd that she never seems to have enough to buy new school shoes, but that's ok, because she know's I'll buy them when the infant comes home from one of her visits to Nana and the ex.

Is it still illegal to beat children? Pity if it is...

Even if it's illegal, you can usually get away with it... But you'd have to be an ass to beat a child. Now spanking may be acceptable, but it can be overused. I've done well with patience and being a pretty good example to follow. ymmv

  10. It's too late to 'beat' it out of these snots. It will take years of disappointments in the real world before they realize that everything in life isn't given to them. Some of them will get it, some won't. Pretty much how life works.

Life does have a tendency to correct idiocy. Early lessons are less painful to be sure.

  12. Well Remixer - this type of thing will definately get them on the naughty list. I hope they all get a lump of coal in their stockings next year (although I guess their parents may well fall into two camps for next year - 'should have done more' or 'ungratefull little shit.')

It would be hilarious if this picture went viral and made it into the hands of some of the parents. I wonder if these snots said to their parents' faces what they said behind their backs. Coal and a cattle prod for next year.

Ugh. This is going to forever go 'round and 'round.
We all grew up in different families with different expectations. As a kid old enough to ask, the only thing I ever wanted was to go to the then-newly-opened Disney World. My parents had zero interest in going so we did not. At X-Mas & birthdays I got the presents that my mom would've gotten for herself (ex: Barbies, & their dream house--I had zero interest in that crap). Just the same, I was grateful, appreciative of the efforts my parents made. I did a lot to help in the household from a early age. I saved up from babysitting for neighbours & family friends in middle school then worked for 3 horrid months at McDonald's, then ran the automotive dept at KMart part-time as I finished high school. (When I was 18 I stopped imposing on my parents financially and moved 2300 miles away.) All that time I did the work of a maid at home so Mom would not have to miss her soap operas. I wouldn't say I was glad to do it but it needed to be done so I did it without complaint.
That's where I see a huge difference between me and my kids. They can look around, see stuff that needs doing and ignore it--no initiative to help the family per se that would then perhaps justify the hope of 'reward'. They don't appear to have a sense of entitlement but they don't appear terribly altruistic either and I do believe there is a inverse correlation between possessing innate altruism and selflessness vs. a sense of entitlement.

Very well said Fangirl. I couldn't have said it better myself. I feel the same way about my kids and I'm not sure where or how the breakdown occurred.
