The GOP is much better at "fixing" themselves than the Democrats are. I have no doubt that the GOP will be back in 2022 for the midterms and then run a good 2024 campaign. Nikki Haley would still win over Biden or Harris. And I have never lived someplace that had a Democrat represent me in the House.

Now, I would hope that they don't have a bunch of "moderate" candidates all split the votes in the primary next time, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

I certainly agree with the thought that Trump enablers have blood on their hands. Note: It might be my small world, but I haven't previously seen Cruz' speech here in Texas (I think) encouraging violence.

It would be so nice to force the Republican politicians to stand alone, and have to make a decision:
Vote to find Trump guilty of sedition,
or vote to support the Republican party hence condoning the violence.
Make them reveal their true nature.
Give voters something to consider when the politician is up for reelection (of course providing them with reminders and proof).

The problem is, most people don’t remember or consider it.
Everything these days it immediate and elemental
It’s about the spin, hype and ads
    And what team you favor...tribal.

    There’s no real Consequences

    Probably but not quickly.
They let this evil genie out of the bottle and it is going to take a long time to get it back in.
The Impeached 45 played to the absolute worst in their base, people they have up till now been able to keep under control.
They feel impowered now and unless this sweep by the Feds scares them to point that they go back under their rocks it will be a long time before the Republicans can get a handle on them.

** make sure read the sub posts too

    Good idea
But at the same, it’s sad that we have to do this.

Why can’t people just do the right thing???
And others actually appreciate that they DID the right thing. (ie: not attack them for it)

It’s part of what’s wrong with the system
And what’s wrong with the culture.
    Too much tribalism

It’s not about good v bad, right v wrong
It’s more about us v them.

My problem with the current GOP members and voters is this...

    They aren’t really conservative.

They claim to be into Law and Order but ignore those in their own party that break the law and promote leaders that skirt it.

They claim to be about America, but they ignore attacks and manipulation from foreign enemies if it’s convenient or they’re helping them.

They claim to be about family values, but many of their actions and activities betray those values.

And want civility only in one direction for them
    Otherwise it’s no holds barred.

    And so on...

I want the hypocrisy to stop.
Be the conservatives you claim to be.
Do the right thing (pun intended)

And learn to be realistic and compromise
This is a complex world and we live in it with others.
    It’s not black and white

My problem is that there are plenty of these "perfect" conservatives (Romney, Paul Ryan, Kasich, Portman, McCain, etc...) that allow the bad boy conservatives to attack the things they don't like if they don't have to do anything. A lot of them re all about the tax cuts for the businesses and rich, but go along with the social culture war to get their votes.

The freshman (freshperson?) politicians have to follow the party platform if they want to move up in the power structure. Any ideas they have for reform, compromise, putting the country first, etc can be ignored or shutdown. Basically they're forced to be part of the US vs Them divisive partisanship.

    It happens with both parties.

I keep the above in mind when listening to politicians, newbies and veterans, who sound sensible and sincere.

This from a conservative and GOPr...actually one of the biggest

    No lessons learned
    The sickness is still there

    Attack and blame everyone else.

It’s going to be a long trudge

Hope the Dems, Independents and everyone else are playing attention

Just do good, ignore the noise
    Don’t believe the BS

Still have to fight for what’s right.

Given the closeness of the 2020 presidential election,
and the lack of an overwhelming blue wave,
    and voters short memories
    combined with party stubborness,
and Republican's paranoia of not getting to keep everything,
the GOP could stand pat and be just fine.

The one thing the Republicans need to unite on is:
Keep Conman Trump on the sidelines as far as running for office.
I would suggest keeping him quiet, but that largely remains to be seen.

Hopefully Conman is so tied up legally
he doesn't have time to mouth off.
And he remains so despondent over losing the election
    he doesn't mouth off.
Gets old and mentally tired. If he does mouth off it's gibberish.

I'm sure Conman will/could eventually find a social media for his rants. Don't underestimate the faithfulness of his followers, and their money. His comments regarding establishing a social media are not that farfetched. This' something the GOP would not want.

Unless Conman survives his trials (legal and otherwise) relatively unscathed, and comes back fighting. Then what for the GOP?

McConnell privately says he wants Trump gone as Republicans quietly lobby him to convict — CNN Politics

IMHO, there’s really only one reason to convict for GOP leaders
In a total realpolitik and cynical manner...because T sucked up all the air in the room.

It was always all about HIM, only him.

Well, most senators think of themselves as potential presidents and enjoy the power and attention

    T prevents that.
So they’ll throw him under the bus to gain control and opportunity

    Pure selfishness

We can hope (and pray, if applicable).

If he's convicted, the reason won't matter. To me.

Actions have consequences; time for Conman Trump to pay up.

While Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate won't begin for two weeks, the pre-trial process just started.

Immediately after all 100 senators were ceremonially sworn in to judge the trial honestly and impartially, Sen Rand Paul called for a vote on the constitutionally of an impeachment trial of a president no longer in office.

The vote failed, 55-45, meaning only five Republicans voted that such a trial is constitutional - Romney, Collins, Murkowski, Toomey and Sasse.

Nearly all Senate Republicans vote against impeachment trial, signaling Trump conviction is unlikely — The Wall Street Journal

This shows that the GOP has no lessons learned
And will continue to be a destabilizing force

Any one not going along with the crowd
    Will be ousted and shamed.
    Still purity tests

They’re not listening to those who object

So the Dems should do as they will
Not expecting any cooperation or reason

And there may be a split off of less raging conservatives

If anything, they’re weakening their party
It’s going to get smaller and get in trouble more.

They need to realize there’s an infection and address it.
Or a limb will be cut off...or a GI that kills them
(Or a plague that kills the rest of us...)
    Dangerous stuff

At least one Republican (Susan Collins who voted with the Democrats that the Senate impeachment trial is constitutional) is reportedly looking at proposing the Senate take some formal action for the record so that her Republican colleagues dont look like total hypocrites.

Scoop: Kaine, Collins pitch Senate colleagues on censuring Trump

As noted in the above , "Some Democrats are interested only if at least 10 GOP senators publicly commit to a censure, thus ensuring the 60-vote margin" (needed to pass such a censure resolution).

I have my doubts that we will see at least 10 Republicans have the honesty, integrity and courage to formally censure Trump for his role in inciting an insurrection through spreading baseless conspiracy theories of a "stolen" election and encouraging his supporters to act to "stop the steal" (as well as personally attempting to illegally or improperly influence the election results in Georgia).

I hear they're being threatened by their own rabid constituents.
The non rabid ones are leaving the party and registering as Dem.
Oregon reps going on record the election was stolen ? If I heard that right ?
It's really getting flat earth crazy.
Niki Haley was kind of shocking how easily she was blowing off the whole insurgent deal like a minor gaf ?

It's just amazing how they act like Dems are just chasing non issues.
It's amazing how they cry censorship when it's objectively clear that ppl shun them for being lying, hating ass holes. How hard is that to understand ?

We need a time machine and a bad ass robot.

    Hypocrisy.

Can you imagine the Republican outcry if it were Obama instead of Trump, with a Republican House and a Democratic Senate?

Which begs the question, would the Democratic Senate do the right thing?

The Republicans will let Conman Trump off the hook without so much as a slap on the wrist. He'll enjoy the usual XPOTUS perks as long as his physical and mental health holds up, and we know how much he likes to travel. We will pay for his travel and pay him to house his SS team.

The Republicans will put their shameful actions behind them. Voters will generally forget, intentionally forget, and favorably recall their shameful actions. A few Republicans will lose to Democrats. Some will lose to GOP challengers in the primaries, but the replacements won't be much different.

Things will go back to normal. History will judge Conman and the GOP harshly, but people without shame can't feel ashamed.

EDIT: I'm thinking the Reupublican have no shame. Correction made: In several places I used shameless when I should've written shameful.

I think the GOP will find “stolen” elections
That is, Future and their own.

    They’re reducing their voting base.
And will find they’re losing more elections

    It’s a slow death.

    UNLESS the Dems fuck up
Or forget to fight and go for wins
    (Something they sometimes do)

Frankly, the US needs a new Conservative party
    Not one for Mr T
But one that represents those conservatives that want integrity

    We’ll see
It’s going to be a bumpy ride
But fortunately T is out (that’s a good thing)

Greed and party will win over integrity. Some of the players will be replaced during the primaries, but I don't see a serious shift away from the GOP.

By 2024 Conman Trump could be back on his feet, and ready to run, thanks largely to the current GOP senators lack of integrity and courage. If he wants in but is forced to remain out it will be because of civil legal issues and/or health problems, not the GOP.
