Who honestly gets offended by "Merry Christmas"?

Among the tidal wave of political correctness that is forced down all of our throats, is the change for many people to saying "Happy Holidays". The reason that is given is because of the desire to be inoffensive to those that do not celebrate Christmas. But many of those people are also not celebrating ANY holiday this time of year.

Think about it. Muslims have no holiday this week. Athiests who don't celebrate Christmas have no holiday (at least none that I know do, though many professed athiests still celebrate Christmas). Jehovah's Witnesses don't. I will admit that I'm not sure about Buddhists, pagans, or other religions that I don't personally know many practitioners of.

But on the other hand, I do know Muslims, Jehovah's Witnesses, athiests, and Buddhists. And I do not know of any of them that get bent out of shape over a "Merry Christmas". Some will just say it back because it's viewed as a casual greeting or well wishing this time of year. Others may point out that they don't celebrate (almost always casually and in good humor). Others simply say thank you, or say "enjoy your time with your family" or whatever. I can't say that in my entire life I've ever seen or heard of someone specifically getting offended by the term.

Am I oblivious to this group of people? Have you personally seen/heard someone get upset over this? If you don't celebrate, does it bother you to hear it?

I'm a Muslim, and I celebrate Christmas. That is, I would, weren't it for the fact that I'm in Afghanistan and my family doesn't celebrate it.

Not because I see it from a religious perspective, but I perceive the Christmas season to be a festival in and of itself, and without any religious connotations from any faction.

I've met a few people who get offended by it, but they're usually of the politically-correct armada who have nothing better to waste their time on than get offended and be outraged over every trivial matter.

You know what, I saw his thread and immediately thought it was a shout out to everyone and I neglected to click on it to see it was a discussion similar to this one. Oops!

And there I went and replied to your questions anyway.

No matter. My friend Absolut will keep me company while I watch tentacle-rape hentai videos and imagine having German-made, chocolate-coated gingerbread cookies.

I think I'll order Indian food in 14 hours.

    Same for me.

No one has ever complained to me who wasnt a Christian. However I once sent an email to a girl saying "Merry Xmas" and she got upset and told me it was CHRIST MASS.

I could have got into that it was actually a pagan festival before any of that, but I liked her pretty well at the time so I didnt.

Some people get offended at anything. I suspect they like being offended.

What you said just reminded me of some people I've known in the past. I'd say to them 'Good Morning'. They'd come back with a scowling 'No It Isn't'. The 'all about them'-ness was more important than the exchange of good wishes; please note, these were not people who were in the early stages of great loss or trauma, or I'd have appreciated the response as an 'emergency flare (up)'. Disambguatifyin' didn't help nothing neither: "Hi there, I hope you have a good morning/day" recieved at best, grudging hurrumphs, and at worst, accusations of 'buying into the MacDonald's culture'.

I don't get offended if someone says "Merry Christmas" to me. I usually smile and wish them the same, and take the greeting for a legitimate wish for my happiness at the moment, regardless of the holiday.

But I have to admit, the sheer inundation of Christmasiness, from Thanksgiving to New Year's, is a bit much to take. I'm not sure I ever really got how much, until I lived in Israel for a year, and it was close to the third week of December when I realized how blessedly free of Christmas stuff everything was, what a relief it was not to have that in my environment.

I get it: Christians have basically two big holidays, and they want to have them big. I have no problem with that. And I get that, as a Jew in America, I am a minority, and lots of people are just going to presume I'm a Christian. And it would just be silly of me to decide to be offended every time it happens. But it can get a little tiresome. That's the simple truth.

So many Christians would not like to see all that fuss either. It's mostly commercial Christmas anyway. We also get fed up with all those Christmassy songs.

If there's anything good about it, it's more light in the darkness here up in North, but I've often wondered, how far would I have to travel, so that I could live through December without having to see all this Christmas stuff around.

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here, but for some reason we are very aware of this event too, because it's big in USA.

When you say "good morning" it is short for "Have a good morning", not "It's a good morning", so someone saying "No it isn't" is just being an ass. Kind of the same for Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukkah. You have to be pretty bad off to take that as an insult of some kind.

If someone came up to me and said "Have a Happy Fredmas", or something similar, I'd say thanks. ( I might ask what Fredmas was, though )

I was bitched out by a hard core wiccan who told me it was Yule, Dammit! and I was an Earth traitor.
Not exactly sure what that means, unless I have indeed sold out to the Martians...:(

Changing Christmas to X-mas isn't an attempt to take Christ out of Christmas (as some of my relatives have complained), but was originally conceived as a way to not take the Lord's name in vain when offering a casual greeting. Ya just can't please some people.

Canthook, the truth is irrelevant to someone who wants to be offended.

    It's "Christ's Mass," not Christmas.

They're trying to take the Mass out of Christ's Mass.

  17. Meh. People get offended by all kinds of things; me, I try to "get over it" instead of getting offended. That you wish someone good cheer/health/etc. is more important than how you do it.

I've not yet offended anyone by wishing them a Merry Christmas ... so far as I know. I don't intend to give up trying though. ;)
