I can't wait for this film. I really hope they don't make too many needless changes, like they did with LOTR.

Isn't it going to be two films? I remember hearing that somewhere...

It's going to be two films, which is a good thing. It means they will be able to take their time and tell the story well. I think they are also planning on showing the battle of Dol Guldur between the White Council and Sauron (something not in the Hobbit but in other sources).

this looks very promising. Hopefully they stay as faithful as possible to the book.
I had a few disappointments with the LOTR films but liked them overall. Not seeing the Shire get overwhelmed/taken back did irritate me, but I can see the time constraints reason there.

I was more upset with LOTR for some of the changes in The Two Towers. The whole, Elrond brings him the sword makes no sense whatsoever. The change in Faramir, so that he's tempted by the ring, rather than strong like Aragorn (and the Numenorean blood that runs true in his veins) was garbage as well. It made him less heroic.

I don't get why it's two movies. Seems like a blatant cash grab. It's a shorter book than any LOTR book, it doesn't need two movies to tell the story. But it also seems like they're adding a lot more stuff that wasn't in the book, so maybe that's why they feel it needs two movies. I'm a HUGE Tolkien nerd, and it just feels like a milk job.

I think it is a bit of a cash grab but there really are a tonne of stories you can tell. The main additions, as I pointed out above, will be the workings of White Council and their battle with Sauron at Dol Guldur. It all happens concurrently with the actions of the Hobbit (it's why Gandalf leaves them all at the Carrock) but it not in the book itself. It ties everything in nicely with the proceeding films though. because you get Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond and (at least) Sarauman working to battle Sauron just before he moves back to Mordor... something that sets up LOTR just as much as Bilbo and the ring.

Oh yeah! I got chills when they all started singing. This is going to be great.

Seeing the shards of Narsil like that still makes me pissy.

I can't help it. The broken sword should be at Aragorn's hip.

Was the other movie more accurate?

I enjoyed the LOTR movies, but I'm nowhere near the enthusiasm of those ridiculous LOTR fan masses (my fiancée being one of them).

On a more important note, I love the singing in the trailer posted by Baraka_Guru and really want to find out the genre it's from. My fiancée mentioned the closest is "Gregorian chant".

    Does anyone know?

It's probably based pretty generically on folk music from either Celtic or Norse culture.

    No. They are both inaccurate.

At least they are consistent to themselves in their changes from the book.

I should clarify: I was talking about The Hobbit (1977) vs. The Hobbit (2012). Were you?

I believe the 1977 animated Hobbit is accurate to the book, which is to say I don't think it gave any shits about Narsil or Aragorn, as they don't appear in The Hobbit, and therefore didn't portray the shards or anything else.

I don't think I'm going to be able to enjoy this. It looks great but it just doesn't look like it's going to be true enough to satisfy me.

Also, Thorin looks too young relative to the rest of the group.

I don't think I've ever let a book ruin a film for me.
