It has become absurd. Red and green lights and decorated trees and Santa Claus have nothing to do with Kwanza or Hanukkah. They are CHRISTMAS lights, Christmas trees, and Santa delivers Christmas presents. When I say Merry Christmas (and I'm doing it every day now) I mean it in regards to Christmas. If someone I say it to doesn't believe in Christmas and believes in something else, no problem. I'm not against other holidays I'm just talking about Christmas.

So Merry Christmas! Enjoy the season!

I always just say "fuck ya mutha". Rubs some folks the wrong way, but fuck it, I'm not about to let my holidays get ruined by the PC thought police.

  4. Midwinter greetings here - may your celebrations, light and laughter drive back the darkness of the rest of winter.
To the dogs - its happy pigs head day - we roast pig heads and the house tends to look a tad like the bedroom scene from The Godfather - except cooked pig instead of raw horse.
Each to their own. If I know someone celebrates christmas or whatever - I use their greeting.
One of the saddest Christmas stories I heard was from my sister when she was at school. One of her classmates parents had decided to become Jehovahs Witnesses - so suddenly all Christmases were cancelled, no pressies - and birthdays would be the same. Her school mates pitied her.
From me and the dogs - happy pig head day to all - however you choose to celebrate it - or not. Please raise a glass to those whos company you have valued or enjoyed, to those who you wish were with you.

  5. i say Merry Christmas because people are kind enough to say Ramadan Kareem to me. If they arent, it's still Merry Christmas to all, regardless of your inclinations.

I dont see what the issue is with people who's skin is so thin that they find Christmas offensive. Ive seen it in my community, so if you want to be treated equally you need to give greetings to all, not just accept your own.

So Merry Christmas, Happy Hannakah, Ramadan Kareem, Happy Solictice and Happy Diwali to all

I don't usually say "Merry Christmas" until it is extremely close to Christmas Day. Otherwise, it's just Happy Holidays from me. I consider this the holiday season, not so much the Christmas season, because there are so many different religions with celebratory holidays during this time of year. I don't give a shit about political correctness, but I suppose I use happy holidays to include NYE/NYD as well, even.

  8. I wasn't aware wishing someone Merry Christmas was un-PC. In my own personal small, anecdotal evidenced bubble, the only people I've seen get upset about this are Christians (by saying Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas). None of my atheist or agnostic friends get their panties in a bunch when I wish them Merry Christmas, which is my standard greeting unless I know you celebrate something else. I honestly don't notice what the cashier at the store or my waitperson says - I reciprocate their good wishes and go on my merry way.

My dad's side of the family are mostly atheists or deists and have no religious connection to Christmas, but we still love to celebrate family and friendship and all that jazz. A couple of years ago, the last day of Hannukah coincided with Christmas Eve. We have a dear family friend who is Jewish, and she usually celebrates with us on Christmas Eve. She and her friend who came with lit their menorrah and sang at sundown and it was just beautiful. This subject is all much ado about nothing, in my opinion. If you want to be offended by someone wishing you Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, that's your fucking problem, not mine.

I find the tension surrounding "Merry Christmas" is more indicative of the wearing down of a cultural hegemony than a specific affront to a religion.

    Ourcrazymodern? still, wondering

Mary, kiss my ass. Historical leanings on fantastic sureties don't debunk individuals' feelings. The terms in which these sentiments are stated are localized. "When in Rome?" I'm just glad that when the days get so short (speaking from the northern hemisphere) that people feel a willingness to wish other people's happiness.

    Agreed.

And Bill O'Reilly and fundamentalist groups like the American Family Association (AFA) turned it into a "War of Christmas" for ratings and fundraising. AFA makes a nice chunk of change with their "Its Okay to Say Merry Christmas" buttons, stickers, lawn signs.

And their latest is their Naughty or Nice retailers list.

Oh nice. They're changing Christmas from the spirit of "peace on earth" and "goodwill towards men" to a spirited witch-hunt.

I agree with mixedmedia. I brought this up because the other day I held the door open for an older lady and said merry christmas and she cussed my ass out saying it was holy holidays. I just said im sorry ma'am and took it like a man. I agree say whatever you want to fucking say, but watch out for the older women. Lol

  14. What a bitch Ralphie. You must have been sorry that she had obviously never before met a gentleman with manners. Hope you let go the door.

Wow, this brings up a good point. The people I know who complain (in that way they do) about how Christmas is under attack are the ones who kinda ruin the Christmas spirit for me. (The others include shopping malls, "festive" ads, and holiday pop music.)

  18. Ruined it for me when they started getting the stuff out in September or whenever it was. Used to be the shops didnt decorate until December. I think it made it more special. At the pet store last year we saw a christmas hannukah valentine easter tree on display. We did point out they had missed the festival of light.

Your first sentence says it all in my opinion. It is a manufactured crisis, by the media and Christian fundamentalists, to save Christmas from the non-believers. It is so contrived, I just shake my head and laugh.

Happy Holidays or whatever you want to say is fine with me; just as long as they don't take those days away from my days off. :D
