It's worse with cable, and even worse with premium cable. They try to insert themselves where they know they won't worry about losing audience to another genre or demographic competing show.

Back in just broadcast only days it was easy it was the Fall season, once those failed there was mid-season replacements. There also became something that was mid-season strong but not fall season strong so they started putting things in as mid-season shows. Recent years we've seen the summer season of broadcast come around.

What's great is that there is new TV all year round instead of just during the fall. Now whether or not it's good TV is a whole different animal.

Actually Sunday nights are a nightmare for me having to cover Dexter, Homeland and The Walking Dead and then for strictly enjoyment, Boardwalk Empire. I also like Once Upon A time on ABC. Five hours in one evening. I hate counter-programming!

This is something I'm in complete agreement with. I cannot recall when I had this many choices in high-quality cable television dramas.
The Industry is truly in a state of flux and I think they are playing many programming choices very close to the vest. Everything is higher stakes, budgets are tighter, number of episodes in a network series may number over twenty while on premium cable they eke out a dozen. I think they have very different goals and different ways that they try to get there. I do see the basic cable stations like AMC slowly trying to get deeper into what we would consider premium cable-like television shows. Hard to do when they are constrained by basic cable budgets.

Finally watched all of episode 2. Great ending leaving them in quite the bad spot. Will have to get episode 3 to see what daylight brings for everyone.

My DVR takes over the TV at 9pm. If there is an NFL game I want to watch, I usually move the Walking Dead recording to a later repeat. A neighbor who doesn't have Showtime usually comes over Monday night and we watch Homeland.

Yes, our DVR takes over as well. I'd be screwed without someone of the male persuasion to program it as it hops, skips and jumps about from network to network.
'We', start with me watching Once Upon A Time live, by myself. Then we watch Dexter live (as there are no commercials to FF thru), then we watch The Walking Dead, FFding thru commericals. If I can, I then watch Homeland by myself but I usually can't stand any more sitting. Monday night we watch Boardwalk Empire and then me, Homeland.

    What about Walking Dead tonight????

Not gonna lie, a little disappointed.

I really wanted Dale to drop Shane, but that would have been too good to be true.

I suppose the bar was set too high in my head and it just didn't have that unpredictable, bizarre twist I've come to expect. Perhaps I should stop reading the spoilers.

TWD rocked tonight. I'm right now going to look at the promo for the second half of The Walking Dead season 2, which begins in February 2012.
I knew what the ending was gonna be but it was so much better than I imagined.
This is life in a zombie apocalypse.
It's also not the season 2 ender, just the half-ender so not the close to this chapter. Yet, how can things just pick up for them after that?

Spoilers can ruin things. It didn't for me this time because I found the the scene heartbreaking.

I didn't know how it was going to turn out, but had some idea. It's funny as much an asshole Shane is, he has been pretty much right on his actions. Rick's (and Dale's) inaction could get the whole group killed.

I thought that the ending lost a lot of its impact on me because it was fairly obvious. With tensions on both fronts (the barn and the search for sophia) running high, it seemed obvious they'd be related. I think that is part of the reason why this show will never be at the same level as a breaking bad or the wire. There is a level of unpredictability on those shows that is not present here.

Fuck this show (in a good way) for making me empathize with Shane. He may be a total scumbag douchetard, but he's got the best interests of the group in mind. Fun watching him spiral down, and now he's got a serious motive for taking out Rick.

I think that was a writing ploy to force Rick back into the primary leadership role. They kinda forced the point that Rick is the one who will take care of business in a rational way, despite all of Shane's chest thumping to the contrary.

Here's a preview of the next episode:

Do you think Hershel knew Sophia was in there? I think he did, but that raises the question why he wouldn't just reveal she was dead to get them out of his property faster... But then he'd have to reveal his shameful zombie farm in the barn. Also, she must have gotten bit on that very first night she was out in the woods, considering the next day is when Otis shot Carl, and we know from events in the show that he died pretty shortly after that. Unless Otis wasn't the one who put her in there...

I thought it was fitting. No matter how big the talk about what to do or what is important (I'm looking at you Shane), when the things get ugly/crazy/hard and someone has to step up and be the man of the house - Rick is the guy who gets it done.

    A fine cross-post.
I think Hershel may have had an idea that's who it was but there really isn't much of a way for him know for sure. It's not like little girl walkers are in short supply and he definitely had a good motivation to keep the barn bit close to the vest.

I still don't understand why the farm is pretty much untouched by Walkers. The small fence wouldn't keep them out.

Remoteness. Low population density. There just aren't that many people out where they are, and the odd walker that roams in they deal with. They cover this more in the comics, and it's also the reason they eventually leave the farm. I dunno how much you want me to spoil but here:
Basically the herd from episode 1, but like 10x as big. One walker hears a gunshot and starts walking. Another walker hears the groans of the first walker and starts following it. This starts a chain reaction that creates roaming herds of thousands of walkers that swarm over the countryside destroying everyone. Basically, it's still really early in the outbreak for these mega-herds to find the farm, but you'd best believe that firefight and all the firearms training will draw a big herd in eventually.

i have to believe that herschel knew she was in there. but why didnt he stop them from looking for her and making up some kind of bull shit.
i found it ironic that all the "other" walkers went running out the door and she stayed in there for a while.

I wondered about why the target practice didn't attract more walkers. Also Maggie told Herschel that they could go find their own farm since all were burned down and crawling with walkers...
