Just need some advice if possible on unblocking twitter from my work.
I had a new PC installed and have been happily using twitter with all of it's functions only to come in today to find that I can only "read" the main page.
No looking at my profile, followers etc etc.
And of course no ability to tweet.

Some of the proxy's I have used don't work (not that I am much up to speed on how they do anyway) but there must be an easy way around this?

    Help please

One possible solution is to have a mobile install of your favorite browser and configure it to use TOR (The Onion Router) but that could raise some flags with your admins.

since it is your employer i would suggest that you do not circumvent the restrictions that have been put in place. I could suggest you use your mobile and the mobile connection (note not use the work WiFi) to read twitter.

Install logmein on your personal computer and connect to your personal computer from your work computer and access twitter and other sites while at work. Or you could install the twitter/tweetdeck app on your phone like others have stated.

Perhaps your superior saw you with twitter and decided to help you focus on the job via getting rid of distractions?

Remember that pretty much anything you do and all internet traffic on a work computer can be logged remotely and watched via IT and reported to your boss.

For some strange reason it is back to full functionality today.
Maybe my boss likes my happy demeanour more than my focus.........

Anyway thanks for the help gang and as usual if you want to find anything out this is the place.

I would agree with the comments about not trying to "get around" the filters they have at work.

It sounds like a good way to get a warning or even lose your job... if the company is blocking it on the PC they own during the time they are paying you, I think you ought not be trying to use it.

I only ever look at personal sites using my phone - I'm certainly not going to risk a job I really like by messing about in company time online using equipment that they monitor.

There's one member of my team who thinks he's being clever and "hiding" his net use - he's on facebook, boing boing, and all manner of other forums and general interest sites all day, every day. He's not bright enough (or thinks he's fireproof enough) to not realise that his history shows what he does. Even if he was, he's not aware that all traffic is logged at head office.

As an IT guy, I personally couldn't give two shits what the people at my office want to do. Our approach (endorsed by management) is to assume that if we start blocking websites they'll find other ways to be unproductive. It's unrealistic to expect people to provide a continuous 8 hours of nose-to-the-grindstone level work every single day, and we've found that by allowing them to take 10 minutes to decompress when they feel the need they tend to be happier and more productive overall.

That said, if your employer does not take this enlightened view of the matter I would strongly suggest you follow their rules. Is it really worth risking your job to find out what inane nonsense celebrities have been getting up to within the last hour?

This doesn't sound like a block anyway -- more probably a transient network issue, but as general advice it's better not to try to circumvent the filters your employer puts in place. I'd suggest that it's equivalent to a locked door in the office; you may be able to pick the lock and open the door, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

I quite agree that it's good to be able to use a few minutes to unwind from time to time, but if company policy is to ban it, then you're a fool to circumvent - in most places that could be grounds for dismissal if the boss was especially objectionable.

  14. Many companies have an internet use policy and employees are required to sign it. If you break it, you're gone.
