I finally got brought into the 21st century of phone technology, however, I am now trying to find a phone case that will handle my lifestyle.

I have found three possibilities, but, I'm not sure any of them are perfect.

Good shock proofing, and the ability to plug in cables. I'm not sure if it would survive underwater however.

Good for rain, dust, and wear & tear abuse, plus the best headphone plug. But, I don't think it works inside the case.

This case can handle the water, and doesn't add much bulk. I will be taking this phone to the beach and don't want to leave it behind. I'm not sure how good it is at using headphones (I guess I could get bluetooth ones), and recharging (kind of doubt that any wireless charging solutions would work), sync can be done over wi-fi now so that isn't a problem.

This case is waterproof, but I'm not sure how usable it is.

Do you know of any better cases? Should I buy 1 & 3 to get the waterproofing of 3 and the shock protection of 1?

Not waterproof, but they do such a good job of covering up everything (my husband has the Commuter for his Droid 3) that I imagine the case does afford some degree of water protection--every hole is plugged with a silicone plug of some kind: http://www.otterbox.com/ I'd get one myself, but the only case for the Droid 3 is the Commuter, and it only comes in black. :(

This is the case I ended up buying. We shall see how it works when it gets here. The product videos look pretty good, even though you would never want to do some of that stuff (throwing a phone in the snow, hitting it with a sled,... ).

But, I still can access the ports and switches...

That should be a question for Siri.

    Siri said: "You're kidding, right?"

I guess she likes to be naked.

I have the iPhone 4 with the Commuter. This case is absolutely the bomb! It provides rock solid protection for your phone but it's not bulky at all. I've had an iPhone since the very first generation and this case is the best one I've used, period. Also, when it comes time to sell your phone, the better condition it's in, the more you'll get for it.

The Lifeproof case is pretty good. I think the front cover could be improved (It isn't like a screen protector and adheres to the screen, it kind of floats above the screen.) But, other than that, it works great. The size is still good, it is sealed in there, and all the buttons and connectors still work.

Did you have the one that was completely waterproof for earlier iPhones? I've seen people use them in the pool,. I've recommended the Defender for all of my friends with newer iPhones and even the one who usually went through 3 phones every 2 years has no scratches.

I also have to recommend www.bestskinsever.com for skinning in addition to a case. I have my Droid X in a case with a full body skin under it, and it's going to be in New-out-of-box condition by the time I'm done with it. I'm a year into my contract and byt this point I've completely destroyed my phone and am shopping for one cheap on eBay

Relevant anecdote for anyone looking for a phone case: I have a Amzer hard silicone case for my Droid X. Over the past year, I've dropped it repeatedly and had no problems. This morning, I had it in the breast pocket of my sport coat and bent down to pick up something I dropped in the elevator. It slipped out, bounced, and dropped straight down the gap between the elevator and floor from the second floor. Between the distance between floors and the service pit under the elevator, it fell at least 20 feet onto concrete. Our facilities guys retrieved it several hours later, and there is now a small scuff on one of the corners of the case.

I've been using seidio cases for the last two years. I had a series of hard drops to my phone which caused one to start to crack so I'm on my second one. The inside is lined with felt and the outside is grippy. doesn't add much thickness either.
