Ain't it the truth, already! If posters can't take the time to read their own post, why should I take mine?

In the world of hi-tech gadgetry, I've noticed that more and more people who send text messages and emails have long forgotten the art of capitalization. For those of you who fall into this category, please take note of the following statement: "Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse..."

and don't forget "as of yet..."

It annoys me to no end to watch classmates give PowerPoint presentations with minor errors, or worse yet, repeatedly misspelled words. Ugh. C'mon, people, you're in college. Do better. Proofread your work.

"I was waiting with baited breath..." Oh yeah? What bait did you use!? Bated breath...

When I'm writing papers, excessive wordiness really irks me. For instance, using "the way in which" instead of simply "how" is one of my pet peeves. FSM help my students if I ever become a TA again.

Choosing words to make ideas sound more important than they are is the hallmark of MBAspeak.

One of my favourite sayings: Why use utilize when using use will do?

    More MBAspeak that I admire:

    • "at the end of the day..."
    • "impacted"/"impacts" (to mean affected/affects)
    • "going forward" (hate.... hate!)
    • "actionable"
    • "paradigm shift" (enough of this already)
    • "learnings" (it's lessons)
    • "leverage" (overused!)
    • needlessly turning nouns into verbs (-ize, -ize, -ize!)

Oh, believe me, there are more.....

Nothing makes me feel more old-fogie-ish than what my former English-major brother calls the 'evolution of language'.
I'll snark about the intellect of people who drop the 'ly' in 'Go slowly,' part of the rendering of adverbs into obscurity, and he'll just nod and urge me not to fight against the tide. It stills boggles my mind but it is true: ours was the last generation that as a group cared about sounding somewhat educated. Despite exceptions like Baraka_Guru popping up now and again, I've come across far too few "under 40's" to feel optimistic about the future of American and Canadian English. OTOH, maybe my brother is right.
