The thing is that in the Midwest/South/Mountain West, they still need to get lots of votes from white males and conservative females. While it is a good thing that they are running and aren't slacking off like has been done for the past 38 years, and there is a chance that they will get people debating the local issues more, I still worry that left wing voters won't show up for this midterm.

In my district, there will be at least 30,000 people voting for Republicans in each election. But, the most Democrats who voted in this district in 2008 was 22,000. It was closer to 16,000 in the 2014 midterm.

Trump claims he’ll end drug addiction with some ‘great commercials’
Trump's plan to address the opioid epidemic is mostly just TV commercials and the death penalty.

Trump gave a rambling and incoherent speech to promote his opioid crisis initiatives, which included the absurd claim that he could end drug addiction by airing television commercials.

“This is something that I have been very strongly in favor of,” Trump told the crowd at Manchester Community College in New Hampshire Monday afternoon. “Spending a lot of money on great commercials showing how bad it is.”

Trump didn’t say how much money he wants to spend.

“When they see these commercials, they say ‘I don’t want any part of it,’ that’s the least expensive thing we can do,” Trump said. “Where you scare them from ending up like the people in the commercials, and we’ll make them very, very bad commercials.”

Trump promised a “large-scale rollout of commercials that show how bad it is for the kids,” adding that “when they see those commercials, hopefully they’re not going to be going to drugs of any kind, drugs of any kind.”

Trump’s speech also included his bizarre plan to imitate some of the world’s most brutal dictators by imposing the death penalty on drug dealers. Trump also used the speech to launch an extended and vitriolic political attack on Democrats over immigration policy.

Trump’s plan to end drug addiction through advertising is, of course, not new, and already a failure. Programs like Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign and “D.A.R.E.” have been around for decades, and have proven ineffective at best, and harmful at worst.

Trump has exploited the politics of the opioid epidemic for a very long time, but his administration has done worse than nothing, cutting funding for anti-drug programs and handing off the issue to a sham policy initiative headed by Kellyanne Conway.

Why Did The Supreme Court Hear A Second Gerrymandering Case?

I can only hope they strike down the use of gerrymandering.
We've got more than enough computers to figure out a neutral balance and division.

No party or group should have an advantage.

I agree that some of the gerrymandering maps are a little out there, but I don't think that it is the reason the Democrats lost 1000 seats since 2010. It isn't even close. And I would expect to see far-left progressives win in the supposedly "safe" blue districts.

I think a bigger problem is the self-sorting of people moving to where they want to live, and they are looking into the politics and laws in the states/cities that they are moving to. I have a high school reunion coming up this year, and I would guess that of the 300 that graduated, 290 moved away to a different place. And my hometown isn't that bad, but it isn't a great place to be as a single person in your 20's.

Opinion | Politicians Don’t Need New Ideas

I disagree with the last note, politicians don't need new ideas or "good" ideas.
They need to DO THE RIGHT THING and act.

They should know by now what to do to help ALL citizens...and the nation.
But no, they cater to radicals and agendas and money.
Whatever gets them elected.

If they're cunning enough...they can get elected and still do the right thing and spin it so they keep getting elected.
Come on...you know what the right thing is.

Lots of openings, fewer raises — The current U.S. labor market puzzle

The easy answer is that companies and management got used to low wages during the Great Recession.
And while they're willing to hire to get a job done
Doesn't mean that they've gotten used to paying more for it.

They want to keep "productivity" high...but this doesn't translate into giving more per hour.
Every angle you can think of is done to minimize this.
Including using salaried positions to get over 40 hrs per week.
Allowing "outside" work to happen without paying for it.
Using contracted positions
And so on...

As a matter of fact, this was like the same mindset that existed before WWII, where wages were standardized.
Anything to decrease the cost...no matter the impact to people.

Now I'm a capitalist...and I understand the need to minimize cost and increase productivity
but much mgmt keeps a short term mindset, without investing into their people and morale.

The companies that do "get it" and are rated the best places to work at...see their margins increase significantly.
So it shows it's worth the effort and the profit.

However, this hasn't translated for the majority of businesses.
They still keep the wages down...thinking they can get away with it.

It's slowly changing, especially with help from the Millennials, who value their self-worth and are ambitious.
But will it ramp up before the next Recession or bubble bursting???

The right blames Obama and BLM.
The left blames Trump and the Alt-right.

While some ads focused on topics as banal as business promotion or Pokémon, the company consistently promoted ads designed to inflame race-related tensions. Some dealt with race directly; others dealt with issues fraught with racial and religious baggage such as ads focused on protests over policing, the debate over a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and relationships with the Muslim community.

The company continued to hammer racial themes even after the election.

As someone here previously posted...the US has been meddling in foreign elections for decades (perhaps even centuries).

The Information Age now provides more options; some (many?) people use the available info to support what they already believe, not to question it, and not to seek the truth. Twisted news is nothing new, it's just much more plentiful these days.

I'm sure the US is still guilty of affecting foreign elections by any means available. Why wouldn't Russia do the same here?

This is different from meddling in elections.
This is making us hate each other.
This is trying to make the country rip apart at the seams.

Putin did the same thing with Brexit.
He was also involved with Catalonia.
Putin is doing everything he can to tear democratic countries apart so he can rebuild the USSR.

Yep, the US has done crappy, horrible things in the past.
We might even deserve some of this.
Our delicate balance has often been at the expense of POC and the unheard so having the Russians destroy that balance has certainly kept the attention on them for good or ill.

But we need to be aware of what they are doing and fight it.
We can't just shrug our shoulders.
This shit can't go on.

A lot of US meddling in elections was to try and prevent an extremist or a violent dictator from taking over though. Sometimes it was for anti-capitalist and anti-religious reasons, so that is an issue.

I want to know how many memes 4chan and conservative media commenters made though as a comparison. I bet it is well over 3 million, so maybe the Russian ads were a small foul in the overall on-line debate. And I don't see that changing for 2019-2020.

Feud over civility in politics escalates amid Trump insults

My problem with this is...one side is shocked and protesting attacks...while allowing their own to attack often...and have been doing so for some time.
A bully shouldn't be surprised and claim foul...when their targets finally turn on them.

Trump is one one of the biggest bullies...and one of the loudest cryers.
Seems the GOP has a short memory of their own loud mouths and aggressive actions.

Can't claim civility when you have been uncivil.

They're here...not the Russian community...they're quite nice. I like their sense of humor and language.
But the spies...from the Russian government...now THEM, they're in like cockroaches and maggots.

They've been here for awhile...and when I say here...I mean everywhere globally.
Electronically, Propaganda and Operations
A subset that has grown from the old Soviet empire...been reborn under Putin's vision...and the Oligarchs cooperation/complicity.

It's like some bad James Bond movie...or new Mission Impossible feature.
They have hacked...and stayed in our computer infrastructure.

Not places like here, at TFP, we're small beans and not of interest.
But targets of interest and influence.
Government, Utilities, Companies, etc...the big guys. Even at your work.
Attacking daily...slowly whittling away...gaining info, placing mis-information.

And they're using people and entities...
It's not just the terrorists...but nation-states with aggressive agendas. China steals, Russia provokes, NK to survive, etc

Now...don't get all paranoid. But just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
Like thieves or bad guys...they're not "everywhere" but they may steal your shit or attack you.

The Russians have become EXPERTS of this all...have the funding, the training, the organization, the mindset. Think of a twisted dark CIA. (and yes, that exists too...we're not innocent)

Now...
Question is...how far have they gone. What can they do? And how can we get them the hell out of there...now that we've finally figured out we're infested.

And is the guy at the top in denial of all the ugly bugs?? Or getting kickbacks from the Pest Removal company? Or did the shit actually put in the bugs himself?? (fuck up your real estate and lifestyle in some bad revenge)

The Russians are here. They're messing with us. (not JUST the US, but everyone...but their special target is Europe and America)
What are we going to do about it???

It's obvious and apparent by now, even to his allies...the president ain't gonna do anything.

As the right wing nationalist movement continues to grow across Europe, fueled in part by Russia, we're beginning to see the same in the US in the form of Trump-supporting alt-right white nationalist reaching out to Russia.

Alabama-based League of the South launches Russian-language page to promote 'Southern nationalism'

An Alabama organization designated as a white supremacist hate group by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is launching a Russian-language page calling on Russia and the American South to become allies.

A letter posted to the League of the South's website first reported by AL.com spoke of natural similarities between Russian culture and the conservative southerners.

"As fellow Whites of northern European extraction, we come from the same general gene pool. As inheritors of the European cultural tradition, we share similar values, customs, and ways of life. And as Christians, we worship the same Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and our common faith binds us as brothers and sisters," the group's leader Michael Hill wrote.

Hill's letter continued that the site's Russian-language page would be the "first step" toward building "[a] firm and resolute understanding and commitment to cooperation between the Russian people and the people of the South [that] could indeed be the foundation for a better world in which our peoples thrive and prosper far into the future."

The group's move to establish the page comes days after President Trump's bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the two leaders spoke about decreasing tensions between their two nations.

Trump was criticized after a press conference including both leaders for appearing to agree with Putin's dismissal of Russia's election interference efforts, which he later clarified he did not intend in a statement at the White House.

ADL researchers have recorded chapters of the League of the South group in 16 states, first appearing in 1994 after Hill, a former professor at Stillman College, a historically black school, founded the group.

The group is described by ADL as "espouse[ing] white supremacist ideology and southern nationalism, advocating for an independent southern nation devoid of Jews and other minorities."
