Wildlife around your house

Near my House there is a huge park, with a lot of green around and its so amazing especially in spring-summer time to wake up early and just to listen to the nature

 

A quarter mile from my home.

A female moose attacked two women in a mountain subdivision above Jamestown

Also a quarter mile from my home.



Don't mess with mommy mooses.

 

I've seen javalina, coyotes, bobcats, and on Friday this guy was at the front door.... I think he ate a ground squirrel...

 

This motherfucker is terrorizing the entire neighborhood. This morning he just stood in the middle of the road making it difficult for my neighbors to drive.

The other day, he nearly gave me a heart attack. As I was sitting at the kitchen table minding my own business, this dick flew past the window I was sitting near and perched on our roof.

What do my cats do? They just stare at it. They're terrible attack cats.

 

He's quite the fellow! Our cats would be terrified and hiding if he were were stalking the streets! I could not help but giggle at "They're terrible attack cats."

 

We have a flock of those near our house. Cranky little shits. Molly insists on protecting me from them. Them turkeys aren't afraid of me; but a ballistic Newfoundland is a bit more than they want to deal with.

I knew we had river otters in Colorado; but I've never seen one. Taken in the lake a block away from my house.

The mourning doves have returned to inspect the nest (which I can see clearly sitting at the laptop) they've used for two years, I guess it's too early to tell if they're going use it.

Previous posts summary: The first year the female sat on the nest for two or three weeks, I never saw a hatchling. Last year there were two, possibly three hatchlings. A cat climbed the tree--I ran it off--but I think the babies had already flown away.

 

I spoke at a League of Nebraska Municipalities workshop in Grand Island several years ago and the mayor took me to the Crane Trust Nature Center . It was not migration season but the Center has a nice little gallery of regional art and photography.

 

Geese, squirrels, birds, had a duck make a nest against the house last year, coyotes, opossums, a fox, get the occasional fly over from cranes, lots of hawks.

 

Out of all the threads I've been reading to get caught back up, I think this one is my favorite. Wow. We live in the middle of the Alabama wilderness, and our nearest neighbor is over a mile away. So, we see and hear a lot of strange things. I used to have an ongoing conversation here with ARTelevision about building our house and living in the wild.

This morning, I saw two dead wild pigs near our gate. I have no idea what killed them, but they were definitely dead. Then, a few hours later, one of them was totally gone. Poof. Where does a dead pig go?

 

We have major feral hog problem in Texas, and as a result we have open season year-round.

The problem is what do you do with the meat once you're stocked up, and so is everyone else?

Donate it (after paying to have it processed)?

Leave the carcasses where you drop them (a great way to start a coyote overpopulation)?

 

Wildlife... Hmmm... Mostly birds - the humming birds are really cool; the seagulls less so. There is also a domestic rabbit that someone has let loose nearby. It's obviously not wild (I petted it once and it will take carrots from your hand).

 

The birds are singing today. Near work, not in the city at home. And the damn Canadian geese are back to shit on literally everything.

I chase Canadian geese away from my bank. I hate the shit all over the grass and sidewalk where I work.

While driving back from Tucson to Denver a couple Sundays ago, I saw a couple crows working on a fresh roadkilled rabbit on the shoulder. As I'm looking, a coyote comes booking out of the scrub, snatched that rabbit up in its jaws, and made a beeline for cover. Animals gotta eat.

 

My office is on the third floor (of 3) overlooking a courtyard with lots of bunnies. This afternoon, I watched a bald eagle, perched on the building opposite me, checking out lunch for nearly an hour.

Mmmm, Hasenpfeffer.
