This looks quite interesting visually. I never did like the serialized comics. I tried to, but for some reason I just didn't like the pacing of them. I think that Peter Jackson and Speilberg would do this series justice, especially if they plan for 3 of them.

My first thought on seeing the title was a weird combination of Rin Tin Tin and My Little Pony/Rainbow Brite.

I am looking forward to this but wonder how many American even know who Tintin is.

Also, I am a bit worried that, in regards to the make up, it resembles Dick Tracy.

I'm looking forward to this, too. Partly in a "don't fuck up my childhood memories" kinda way.

I loved Tintin growing up, it was one of the few cartoons my parents would allow us to watch on TV, when it was made into an animated series. I think this as said above by Spindles is a "don't fuck up good memories" type deal and who knows, maybe between Spielberg and Jackson, there might be half a brain there to keep it true to the comic strip and not for commercial appeal.

I've read on other sites from folks that've seen it that they were "bored sense-less" and left after a few minutes.
I hope for Spielberg's sake, that it's better than that.

The only thing I know about Tintin is what he looks like. (mainly from book catalogs that show international comic books as well as local)

Can anybody here compare Tintin to another literary work so as to give me some perspective into the character?

He must be worth reading if Spielberg made a movie about him.

My first attempts to get informed on this subject show a book published in June 1974. The description on Amazon certainly does sound interesting. Looks similar to Dick Tracy at least visually from those pages you can see on there.
And Wikipedia tells me (finally looked there) that it is was published from 1929-1976 and started in French in Le Petit Vingtième in January 1929.

First some perspective - the original comics were written a *long* time ago. The author died in 1983, and earliest stories published were written in the 1930s. My viewing of the trailer is that they are trying to stylistically match how those comics looked.

These stories are (essentially) mysteries with Tintin and his dog Snowy as the main characters. He is helped by a sea captain and 2 bumbling detectives (who are twins).

The story on which the film is based was written during world war 2.

The wikipedia page has a lot of fairly general information:

I dunno...I'll go to see it, because I really did love the comics. But I'm not sure how much of Herge's work can come through in a movie version, even animated and not live action, even by Spielberg and with an amazing cast of voices. I'm not holding my breath. But I'll go see it.

Having read all the comics as a kid... I'm not looking forward to this. I saw another trailer earlier. As the article said, something is off about the look.. Plus there does not seem to be the same sense of humor as in the books.

I remember reading the hard backed comic books in elementary school with my friend. I really liked the books and the stories. I really don't think I will see this movie, I might rip a copy, but I have no desire to see it.

I've never read these comics, but the look of it really reminds me of fallout boy. I'm wondering if they used this as a basis when developing the character.

I took my wife and kids. First their impression:
the boys 5 and 7 year old enjoyed it. My eldest gets pretty caught up in 'scary' moments and he was a little scared, his 5 yo brother loved it. Both really enjoyed it (7yo got the secret of the unicorn and red rackham's treasure books for Christmas). His first question was
where were the Bird brothers - the baddies in the book
    .

My wife also really liked it.

Now for the view of the Tin Tin fan (from when I was a kid - I have read ALL of them). If you are expecting a faithful rendition of the "Secret of the Unicorn", you'll probably be disappointed.
    *Mild spoilers only following*
This movie borrows quite a bit from "Red Rackham's Treasure" (particularly the ending), but leaves itself open to do the major chunk of this second book as a sequel. I understand why this was done, especially if this movie tanks and they don't make another one, but it feels a bit wrong. There is also a *lot* more action in the movie and there is a cameo from Bianca Castafore (who appears in multiple Tin Tin books, but not either of these).

Having said all that, I think the book would not transfer particularly well without some of this (the Secret of the Unicorn is a pretty short story without any great amount of action).

I quite enjoyed it - maybe the Sydney Morning Herald article helped to lower my expectations.

The Mrs. and I went to see it the other night. I am a big Tintin fan-- read most of the books when I was a kid-- and my wife had never heard of the character before. We both enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting it to be a perfect transfer of either "The Secret of the Unicorn" or the genre in general, and it was neither; but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was good fun. Not breathtakingly amazing, but good. I didn't regret paying the money to see it: I felt entertained, and would see a sequel. My wife, expecting not to like it much (she mostly went to please me) was pleasantly surprised to find it, according to her, a good time adventure story.

It didn't rock my world. It wasn't exactly the same as reading a Tintin comic. But it was not bad at all.
