I've always noted that there is a difference between media and real life...and different standards.

Those in magazines/pics have certain traits that are good for photographs and what they are trying to basically sell.
Those in films/movies and other movement related media...have other traits and standards. (speaking, body movement, etc...)
Hell, even those in erotica are different than those others.
Often one can't make it in the other.

And since those arenas are all professional...your standards become higher and different.

And finally there are trends within all the media, those which execs decides to portray at the time.

But this doesn't relate to desires in real life...and those that expect others to keep to media standards are being shallow and unrealistic.
However, I've found that people often put those standards upon themselves, not what others are doing, in worry and competition.
Example, women often dress for other women, not men...and do things men wouldn't even notice. Men worry about things ladies don't push too.

I don't want my media to be RL...nor to I expect my RL to be media.
People need to learn to separate their worlds.

Work isn't home, Web talk isn't RL, Media are pros...all different.

And I don't expect my celebrities to be personally in sync with my desires in real life.
Why do people worry about the difference and try to attain that??

I don't try to compete in body type with Hollywood or Sports pros...I try to compete with those I'm actually competing with.
Nor would I want to be with a woman who'd expect me to be at pro level.

Sure, there are men who'll only go out with models...they're typically douchebags
And there are women who'll only go out with certain men...they're typically materialistic PITAs.
And believe me...these are the same narcissistic shits that will betray you sooner or later.
    IMHO

I've got better things to try my time at.

My wife achieved a "factory gap" (is that really what they are calling it?) last year. Of course, she had to get cancer, go on chemotherapy and nearly die but damn, there was gap! :)confused:)

Anecdotal for sure, but I don't know ANY men that prefer those super skinny model types that are in WOMEN'S magazines. You surely can't blame me for the seeming preference for the skinny women ( not that skinny women can't be attractive ). I tend to like all types. I do tend to have and upper and lower end to the morphology spectrum, but on the whole I have a rather generous range that I find attractive.

One thing that bothers me lately ( probably because I'm getting old ) is when I see a fairly undeveloped young woman, who could easily pass for a young teenager in porn. I usually hit the back button on that. Otherwise woot

Not everyone over weight is lazy. Everyone is different, different metabolism, different builds, different economics, different ancestry.
I know of people eat healthy exercise work hard and have thyroid issues and can't lose weight or maintain there weight. Judging someone based on appearance is no different than judging someone based on there skin color or sexuality or gender. We should be beyond that by now.

    Amen.

I am a fat bastard as everyone knows it but the odd thing is I don't eat much at all and I work 12 to 14 hours a day. But fat people do have the image of being lazy because we are fat and that's just people being ignorant I am the farthest thing from lazy but I am fat

Time to bust some truths on this thread that has made me the popular and well liked guy here for all the years I've posted.

If you are fat you eat too much period. I say this as a former obese person. You might not think you do, but you do, period. You don't have to like this, but you are not violating the laws of physics. If your body can't properly break down fat, you would have a horrible syndrome which would have long been discovered in childhood.

The fact is most people have no idea how much they are over eating. I am a 6' tall male. I've had my RMR (resting metabolic rate) directly measured, its about 1900 calories a day. On an average work day where I walk about 4-5 miles and do other life activities my TDEE is between 2500 (sitting mostly on my ass) to 3200 (running around like a crazy man). This too was measured, I'm a scientist man, I get into this. Interestingly the calculation method was still pretty darn close to what my measurements were, (you can find these all over the internet, google TDEE, and don't say you are active, you arn't, those are for real athletes only and scientifically everyone overestimates their physical activity).

The real harsh truth is if you are fat not only are you eating too much, BUT your TDEE is HIGHER than someone your height/sex who is fit. Fat does take metabolic energy to maintain, and the fatter you are the more you have to eat to maintain it. Its why someone 400+ lbs can easily lose 30-40 lbs a month once they start eating proper amounts, and someone mostly fit might lose 2-3 doing the same. I lost an easy 2-3 lbs a week when I was obese (230 lbs) and its been very difficult to lose those last few pounds to get to super fit levels.

No your genetics are not at fault, directly. My paternal side of the family was all fat for 3 generations. Its not our genetics that make us fat in terms of magically screwing up our metabolisms. Its our appitite that does. If I ate what my body tells me to eat I'd be 300+ right now, I'm hungry a bit as I'm typing this. I'm sure in some ice age living this was useful but its not very useful in the land of plenty. When someone who is thin says "I eat everything I want and never gain weight" what they are saying is "I have a small appetite" when you see them eat a big meal, what you are not seeing them do is eat snacks at their desk, or breakfast etc. I have a brother who is out of shape, lazy, but thin, why? He's never had a big appetite, much like my moms side of the family. He's "skinny fat" no muscle, he doesn't work out at all, but he's not over weight by numbers (I'm sure he is by body fat but thats another post).

So saying all fat people are lazy isn't going to be true, but saying all fat people eat too much is going to be true for 99.999% of them. They might think they don't eat that much but they do. Fat people also lie a lot about what they eat, this is why not very smart in my opinion researchers couldn't figure out these fat people who didn't eat much, they trusted survey data. The fatter you are the more you lie about what you eat, you secret eat, you mentally justify.

Being fat is a choice. It was hard for me to lose my weight, I needed motivation (sex) to help justify the effort, but it was purely a mental effort, it was learning the truth about losing weight (I used to be a atkins fan, but thats another post as well), and it was sticking to it religiously for about 5-6 months and then learning to maintain.

It was also SO damn worth it. First my initial motivation, sex, yea it really really paid off, and suddenly my shitty personality didn't get better but a lot more attractive women found me attractive enough, but honestly that was a MINOR plus.

My heart rate is now at an athletic level (this is correlated with a longer life).

My knees which were starting to have major issues at 35 in terms of pain are now pain free and I can run up stairs I walked up like an old man 10 years ago.

Frequent sinus infections (2 a year that required antibiotics) have not returned since I got to a healthy weight.

I almost never get sick, I didn't even catch a cold for 3-4 years after I got in shape. I have had a couple since but very short lived, 2-4 days.

I've not had the flu since I got in shape. Likewise I've not thrown up since I lost the weight. Sometimes when fat, eating, not even over eating would trigger some reflex where I'd get sick.

My BP is again apathetic level. I am not a cardio person, I don't run or do cardio exercises.

I am over 45 and easily pass for early 30's.

I'm not bragging, I'm begging. If you are fat FIX it. Your life will improve in ways you can't even predict now. When I was 230, I thought I'd be good at 210, I wasn't. At 210 I realized that under that fat I was a giant wuss muscle wise, I hit the gym. At 210 I thought I'd be good at 190, I wasn't. At 180 I was good, an am good, but thats also with muscle gain. I'm guessing I've lost 60ish lbs of fat, and I'm never going back, I'm better in my 40's than my 30's, and by todays fat accepting logic, I wasn't even "that fat".

    Tough love above.
We have an epidemic of obesity in this country and in other parts of the world.
There are a few individuals with metabolic derangements causing their obesity but their number is dwarfed, by orders of magnitude, by those who consume too much.

Im not going to argue or say you are wrong, but with that said I think there's more to it. I'm fat.......we all know this. Yesterday was Saturday. I didn't eat breakfast I drink lots of coffee with creamer and no sugar, I had a Snickers for lunch, I had a pack of crackers around 2, and I had a #2 medium size from wendys for dinner at 8:00 when I got home. That is what I had yesterday. Is that eating too much? I'm asking.
My bad habit is popcorn 5 or so nights a week before I go to bed.

Hypothyroidism is more common than type one diabetes and can occur at any point in life. Not only in childhood. Hypothyroidism is the most under diagnosed disorder and is rarely discovered before the thyroid begins to die resulting in autoimmune disease. A simple blood test will rarely can determine weather or not the thyroid is producing t4 and t3 sufficiently.

    What's in a #2 medium size from Wendy's?

There are data that suggest you would be better off with your calorie intake shifted earlier in the day rather than close to bedtime.
Have you ever tried eating breakfast on a regular basis?

Its not what you do in a day, it what you do over time. There are days I'm very bad in calories, and I balance those with days that I'm good.

Edit, I just looked up a Wendy's #2 medium value meal calories and the first link I found said its 1500, thats more than 1/2 my TDEE on most days.

Until you log and weigh everything you eat, you won't know how much you are eating. I'm now very good at "calorie guessing" after months and months of logging and weighing. To really lose weight I found I needed to rely on making my own food because I could be more sure of the calorie counts that way, you can't trust labels which are usually untested and allowed by law to be 20% off even if they were tested (which most aren't, they take the companies word). You can't go by scoops or the like too. I found out how bad those were when I compared measurements to grams (I always try to use grams). The human body is very efficient when it comes too food, people are really surprised how little food they need to survive. My TDEE is an average of 2700, my wifes is close to 1900. If we both ate 2100 a day, I'm losing weight shes gaining weight until a new equilibrium reached. I'd be a very skinny man and she'd be a chubby woman.

If you are gaining weight, you are eating too many calories.

If you are maintaining you are eating near you TDEE, and if you are fat, you are eating more to do so than someone who is not and your same relative height.

If you are losing weight you are eating below your TDEE, the fatter you are the easier that is because your TDEE is higher.

There are some quirks to weight loss you can find once you really get into doing it. For one I would lose a large amount of weight relatively speaking in a day or two but then platue for a week. Investigating this, its called the "whoosh" effect, and the theory is that was you lose fat the cells take up water, this keeps your weight more constant, at some point the body flushes that water out, and "whoosh" you lose 2lbs suddenly. Likewise when I would over eat I found (beyond water weight) that I'd not see the effect on the scale for a bit. The end game though is that if you eat less than you burn, you lose weight. I guarantee if you went into a facility that gave you only a monitored diet, you would lose weight.

Currently today I'm at 900 calories, I had a big salad, some coffee with milk and sugar, and one of my kids Halloween candies. Dinner is going to be 6 large eggs, (432 calories) and three pieces of toast, (210). No butter. Thats 1500ish for the day. Thats the number I found if I shoot for I'll see movement on the scale. Its lower than some would recommend (the usual cut is 500 calories, I go for 1000), but since I tend to not lose the 2lbs a week a 1000 calorie deficit gives me but closer to 1 to 1.5, I'm going to assume a number in there is slightly off. Doesn't matter which one. I do these numbers all on my phone, it took me a while to set up with the foods I eat the most, but once its done it only takes a few minutes a day total to properly log. If I don't log, I don't lose, my wife doesn't either, I can maintain without logging. I think most people are like that, and you need to log as you eat, as its very easy to forget things you had a "bite" of.

Hypothyroidism is the most common excuse people want to use for being fat, many years ago when my wife and I were getting fat, we assumed it had to be a hypothyroid for her and that the tests were wrong, they weren't, she ate too much. Hypothyroidism is extremely easy to treat, and no it doesn't make you fat, it just lowers your TDEE some, so even if you had it, even if it were completely undiagnosed, if you follow the usual weight loss steps you still lose weight. Lets say I calculate my TDEE at 2000 a day, lets say I eat 1500 a day for 2 weeks but I don't see any weight coming off. The reason would be either my TDEE is lower than I thought, or I'm not counting right. The solution is you cut 200 calories off your day and try again.

And before someone starts into it, starvation mode is a myth too.

Oh I'm going to be making friends today :)

It doesn't matter when you eat your calories, your body works the same. For ME and my huge appetite, I do much better skipping breakfast as natural fasting shuts down many of those signals that say EAT MORE FOOD. If I have a breakfast I'm more hungry at lunch than if I had nothing. I'm a fan of intermittent fasting, which coincidentally is linked to longer life spans in many organisms which I view as a bonus if not the reason I started to use the technique.

Intermittent Fasting 101 : The IF Life

Intermittent fasting may be center of increasing lifespan

This being said, it works for me, but if I ate the same calories but spread it out more, it would also work.

Its not about meal timing, it about energy balance, all the other effects like thermogenic effects of digesting food, etc are all minor compared to the calorie balance.

You said... "if you are fat you eat too much".

So what you really mean is that if you are fat then your calorie count is more than what it should be compared to numbers based on height age etc.... Is that correct???

That's two different things, Espically to an uneducated person like myself.

And if I'm correct you said it don't matter what time I eat as long as it balances out on my number...

Regardless of the advice on here, and the facts that are presented, people should consult with an expert before doing drastic calorie cuts and major weight loss strategies when there is a large amount that needs to go. I lost 94lbs one year. My body still has issues because of the way I did it. I'm healthy now, and curvy, and mfing stronger than I ever thought I'd be. I was 224lbs. My body wanted to hover around 175 - 180 for years and I still fight it. You can eat 3000 calories a day, and still be starving your body... of nutrients. So, just be sure to educate yourself, with a professional, so that your health can be monitored.

I used to weigh 285#, these days I struggle to maintain 160. Of all the problems that I expected in life, keeping my weight UP isn't one I anticipated.

I can't recommend cancer for weight loss; but it worked for me.

I'm the same person at 160 that I was at 285. I have noticeably less strength and stamina; but age plays into that, as well. I can say that there was not a single point along the way where my Dr was happy about my weight. Even now, I get the occasional quip about losing weight. F that, I'd weigh 180 or so if I could. It gives me a little leeway to be sick or such.

The reason I ask is for many people alcohol sneaks in a lot of calories into their diets. But the body doesnt really do a good job with alcohol. So most gets processed into fat. And smoking just drags down your health in the long term. But you already knew that.
