This is indicative of how Trump is doing as a "world leader" in the opinion of the rest of the world.


What The World Thinks Of Trump

...Two patterns jump out. First, since Trump took office, confidence in the president has gone down further, on average, than favorability toward the U.S.: Confidence dropped 47 percentage points; U.S. favorability just 13 points. Since 2005, perceptions of the U.S. have changed less than those of the president.I

Second, while respondents’ views of both America and the president have decreased in the past year, the drops are not uniform. Some of the biggest declines have been in countries with whom the U.S. has a collective defense agreement, such as NATO members and Japan, especially when it comes to confidence in the president. Mexico, unsurprisingly, also saw a big public opinion drop on both questions. On the other hand, public favorability toward the U.S. has gone up in Russia, and public confidence in the president has gone up in both Israel and Russia since Trump took office.

But Trump is popular in Russia and Israel.

 

I heard North Korea's representative was in the front row. I think North Korea's ruler is more nuts. He is a young punk that threatens the neigborhood until someone finally stands up to him. Which really should be China.

I thought Trump sounded pretty good this time, didn't sound silly like he usually does. Listen to his voice from other speeches...this time there is something different.

A lot of the English like Trump over here for some odd reason.

It will be interesting what I hear at Tea time. Lets pray there is not a war. Especially for the people of North Korea who have suffered for decades.

 

Trump always sounds better when reading from a script or teleprompter but the substance of the message leaves many questions.

Certainly, Trump can bomb NK into a rubble and "totally destroy North Korea."

But at what cost?

Can he prevent NK from launching 10-15,000 low tech but still deadly rockets, mortars, and other old style artillery embedded deep in the mountains and aimed directly at Seoul, 35 miles away with its 10 million citizens and 25,000 US troops as the targets? They wont cause the same rubble pile as a barrage of far more deadly US tomahawk missiles with conventional warheads, but they could certainly kill tens of thousands of civilians (and US military) and cause widespread destruction of Seoul.

And at what cost of unilaterally withdrawing from the multi-lateral Iran agreement in which Iran has been in compliance? How will US withdrawal prevent Iran from reestablishing a nuclear weapons program?

I heard a whole lot of belligerent "huffing and puffing" and "America First" ultra-nationalism but not much in the way of real world foreign policy engagement.

 

What do you think is going to happen with NK? Do you see any reasonable negotiations to end the tensions? Honestly, I don't read up on Trump and world leaders to much. Too much stress comes with it.

You are very knowledgeable on politics. Will try to follow some of these posts when I can.

 

I'm no foreign policy expert but Trump's approach of personal insults, much like his approach to anyone he sees as an "enemy" in domestic politics as well, is counter-productive, to say the least. In this case, we have two psychologically challenged individuals, Trump and Kim, engaging in childish and bellicose behavior with no end in site but which might result in one pulling the trigger.

Diplomatic efforts should always be the approach of choice until there is no other alternative and should involve all interested parties and not a unilateral US action. Often, it is perception that raises tensions. Removing the face of the US as the primary enemy would be a start. To that end, I would consider the recent Russia/China proposal that would have the US freeze military exercises with South Korea that NK perceives as provocative in exchange for NK freezing nuclear and ballistic missile testing (the "freeze for freeze" approach). There is also a continued role for economic sanctions but only if China is on-board and only targeted at the regime in a manner that wont be redirected to the people of NK..

In the end, no one has had an effective solution for 50+ years , given that one party is such an isolated state ruled by leaders more concerned about protecting their own regime and maintaining their stranglehold over their own citizens.

IMO, Trump ignoring the more moderate voices within his own diplomatic/foreign policy advisers and being more enthralled with the ideologically extreme "American firsters" presents a greater danger to the US than any previous administration.
