Hey Ice|Burn, Have you read any The Walking Dead comics? I did at first for reference material, and well, I wish could feel as upbeat about
what becomes of The Walking Dead survivor children
    as you do!
    Comic book
OMG. Volume 11 (so, about 100 comics in), which is the latest my library carries, knocked me out. One of the television characters finally bought it. It was awful. I still shudder.

I know comic books don't equal the television shows but thematically, sometimes they overlap. Also, Robert Kirkman (writer of the comics/an exec producer on the show) has stated that the television show will continue to pull no punches and I believe him. This show is so much fun!

I haven't, I've been meaning to. Someone suggested a good way of catching up in this very thread that I may have to take advantage of.

I had been out of the habit of reading comic books for let's say some time, though I had given an (S. King) graphic novel series a stab (fail for me).
One of The Walking Dead's themes is one you already know really well: humanity. How you lose it, hang onto it, what defines it? In the case of TWD it is man's humanity in the midst of a zombie Apocalypse. Settings don't get much more cool than that. Robert Kirkman was in his twenties when his comic, The Walking Dead, hit the stands and his writing has certainly evolved. Like any comic book series I stuck with, there were periods where I liked the story less and times when I was more engrossed by it. Recently, The Walking Dead comics have been been really compelling. Of course some really far out shit has hit the fan in the course of the comic series. Kirkman writes fearlessly and that really amps up the enjoyment factor for me.

There is no "Daryl Dixon" in The Walking Dead comic books but there is Michonne and she's very, very deadly-cool. We may get to see her next season (may). I hope.

I've been a HUGE fan of the comics for a while. It gets grim... Like, wow, grim as fuck. Some of the comics gave me nightmares. The show? Ehhh I have to wait and see what they do with this season. Season 1? First three eps were money in the bank. Last three? Ehh... I haven't had time to watch the Season 2 opener yet, will be doing that later today after I get off work.

My main gripe so far is one of the major changes they made to the story. A certain someone has no business being alive right now... And that death marks a serious start to a character arc for one of the other major characters. Kinda frustrating they would change something so fundamental to how one of the characters develops, but it doesn't mean it's not coming somewhere down the line. I also understand not wanting to make it totally like the comic, to give us comic readers something to watch without giving everything away. I really like the two redneck brothers, Merle and Darryl. A great addition. I hope they bring Morgan back later on. Can't wait to see Herschel and his family.

Basically, I just keep waiting for these characters to get punished. That was what made the comic so enthralling, seeing people suffer and crack, testing their humanity in a totally inhuman world. The zombies aren't even really the bad guys... Humanity's biggest enemy is itself, the zombies are just there as atmosphere, a backdrop to the telling of these poignant character stories.

Kirkman has said that certain someone's still going to end up the same way. They just wanted to stretch it out longer for the series rather than have it happen right off the bat like in the comic.

Makes sense, I hope it goes down the same way too. Only an hour left until I can go home and watch the premier!

The premiere was fine, but those three monologues (opening scene and the two at the church) were cringe worthy.

also, the whole Lori-Shane thing is quite uneven. One day he tries to rape her, a couple of days later she complains that she is giving him the cold shoulder?

Before season 1, they take place in the early days of the outbreak. You can watch them any time.

Might get around to watching s2:E1 before Sunday but it is starting to look like I will be piling up some episodes on iTunes and watching 2 or 3 at a time. At least I do not have to wait until they hit DVD.

Was just thinking of Andrew Lincoln and how often British actors play such convincing American characters. I hear Hugh Laurie nails the American accent on House (never have watched it); I have a difficult time picturing him with anything but his proper British accent after enjoying his work on more than a few BBC productions.
And of course there is Stephen Moyer on True Blood - that show gives you the double whammy of a Kiwi female lead and British male lead both convincingly playing born and raised southern US characters.

Lincoln is really good. I've not ever seen him in anything but TWD but since I write about the show I listen to stuff like the Comic-Con interviews and such and was pleasantly surprised--his accent is sex-ay!

Moyer and Paquin are seasoned actors and I agree, they are very convincing as denizens of Bon Temps, Louisiana. (Incidentally, Sam Trammell ('Sam') is a native of LA and to my ears his accent isn't quite as good as Paquin and Moyer's though I like him lots as an actor.) I can't imagine how much practice it must take to make an accent sound like it should.

You can tell in the first season that the black girl playing Tara (her name "slips my mind" egads the American Sign Language sign comes to mind instantly there for me) is not native Southern - she sounds like a Southern Californian actress trying and not quite making it with the Cajun sound. She does improve notably in season 2.
I do have season 3 on DVD but have not managed to get more 30 minutes into it. I read the first three books and now the TV show is sorely lacking for me.

I like the mix of characters in walking dead, they are a diverse group and make for a nice mix of conflict/post apocalyptic "family"

In terms of British actors with flawless American accents, it is hard to beat Idris Elba on "the wire" (Stringer Bell).
