Why do people get sleeve tattoos?

Why do people get sleeve tattoos?
Is it to be different? To be edgy?
There seems to be too many people with them these days for it to be those two answers.
I'm probably missing the answer.

I myself don't have any tattoos, mostly because of my fat droopy body. Just wouldn't look good.
I get the wanting a tattoo for personal reasons. To have them mean something.
Is that basically the answer for the sleeves? Seems kind of extreme.

If you have any insight into this, please enlighten me.

Btw, do they make mustache tattoos? If so, are they realistic?

Pretty much this ^. 'Being trendy' could be a reason, but hopefully most people put some thought into getting readily visible tats.

Unnecessary response to a rhetorical question: Some women get tats around their eyes, sort of a permanent eyeliner. I suppose it could be done to enhance a beard or mustache, as long as the person never shaved. Or it could end up looking like those 'clearly enhanced with make-up 5 o'clock shadows' common in the '70s & '80s, even the '90s, TV shows.

 

I have 70% of my sleeve done one arm and half sleeve on the other. They aren't for anyone but me and I love my artwork. As to why....well because I wanted to.

I would like my eyebrows to be a little darker. They are light colored and fine. Though I wouldn't want some obvious change. It would have to be subtle, being a dude.

 

A woman I worked with had the edges of her eye lids done, she thought it was great. It turned out well, fairly light (no raccooning ).

In some cases it's carefully weighed decision personal decision.

* A sort of related observation: In my limited experience, it's the younger women, who are mentally more girl than woman, who show up at the tattoo & piecing parlors in groups. It could be they're sheeple, and/or it could be safety in numbers. Some of the guys working are seemingly nice guys who happen to be heavily inked and/or pierced; some of the other guys are very crude.

 

Yeah, I've seen the lemming aspect of tattoos personally.
My sister and s-i-l have this childhood friend (they go on women-only trips to the casino boats annually) who has an 18 year old son, who decided he wanted to be a tattoo artist one day.
He somehow talked all 3 women into being his test subjects. Nothing elaborate like sleeve tattoos, just ankle, wrist, maybe a back tattoo, but still done by a kid who's not a professional.
I've seen his art on paper, it's pretty good, but so far it hasn't translated well to skin. I guess over time if he sticks with it he'll get better. Hopefully.
Otherwise, they'll be a mess.

I guess you gotta ask why do people get Tattoos at all. I almost got one when I was 19 in the Navy but I chickened out after watching some of my buddies get them.

 

Many of mine are in memory of people I have lost.

 

I wanted a tattoo for many years. At least since I was a little kid in the 70s. In the late 80s my roommate had a book that made me want one even more. My problem (other than being too young when I first wanted one)? Deciding what I wanted to get and eventually watching tattoos become a trend.

I finally got my first tattoo last year. Partly it was that I turned 50, but it was also just time to do it. A friend suggested that I find a tattoo artist I liked, tell him/her what I wanted and then just let the artist do their work. It was the best advice.

For my first (and still only) tattoo I wanted a half sleeve with an octopus (octopuses, octopi? are one of my childhood fears) and now I have it. I love it. Not everyone gets to see it as it's under my shirt most of the time. Some of it sticks out when I wear a t-shirt but the bulk is still hidden. It's for me and people who see me naked.

At my age I am less concerned with the idea that tattoos are too trendy. Things that are also trendy: Suits, Shoes, Underware, Glasses, etc. Many people wear these items too. It doesn't stop me from also wearing them (hopefully in my own way).

If that makes me a lemming... where's the cliff?

 

I dated a stripper for a while and she used to put body make up on to cover the Tattoo on her left breast. She said the club owner didn't approve of it and she thought she got better tips without it.

 

i would love to have one. my only problem is they are can get real expensive real quick. and i have other things to spend money on......

 

Thats the way to do it, atleast you were debt free and had a shoebox full of money. congrats for that.

 

My tattos are the story of my past and my life. I get them to not forget what I've done and where I've been. They also define who I am. If my artwork offends you, then your not the company I need.
