I am starting this thread for press releases that are written in advance but end up being completely wrong for whatever reason. I only have one entry to offer here; hopefully someone else can contribute or at least take the thread in another direction that actually can go somewhere then.

My only other thought here is the picture of Truman holding up the paper touting Dewey's victory.

my contribution is about the Shuttlecraft Columbia - I saved these files 8 years ago on what had to be a Fark link. My screencap is of the main html file and zoomed out enough to read all pertinent text.

NASA's desperate plea for attention irreparably set back and nearly destroted the career of a legitimate scientist. There's a reason legitimate science almost invariably advances through publication and peer review rather than by press release and media hype.

Also, the Daily Mail is a terrible publication is one of the world's worst publications and has not changed significantly since their endorsement of Italian and German fascism in the 1930s

I am including general screw-ups on webpages here - kinda sorta fits. I found this little gem of a screencap that I had forgotten about while cleaning out some old files.

I was watching a sports TV report on the weekend, and they were discussing a football player who was asking for a release from his current club (in Brisbane) to move closer to home (Perth). Anyway, this player gets his release and is then offered a big money deal at a 3rd club (in Melbourne - not really any closer to his family).

So, the player initially rejects the big money.

Next, the Perth club releases a statement saying that they are happy that the player has rejected the big money to come home.

What's wrong with this? The next day, the player accepts the big money offer and is moving to the club in Melbourne. So a footy club releases a statement about a player that has never played for them, and in all probability will never play for them.

I'd find a link to the story, but I'm lazy!

For that price it's insulting to charge for shipping.

Obama may close Guantanamo in a year - draft order

By Jeff Mason and Randall Mikkelsen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, moving swiftly to restore a U.S. image hurt by accusations of torture, is ready to issue orders on Thursday to close Guantanamo prison and overhaul the treatment of terrorism suspects.

A draft executive order obtained by Reuters on Wednesday sets a one-year deadline to close the controversial U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where suspected Muslim militants have been detained for years without trial.
Obama, who was sworn in on Tuesday, is expected to issue the final order on Guantanamo on Thursday, along with orders to ban abusive interrogations and review the detention of terrorism suspects, a congressional aide and a White House official said.
